i'm not sure sure about ruff sqwad not appealing to road guys though, the grime forums (especially a few years ago) used to have stuff like 'old skool tinchy>>>>>all' etc and all of slixs early stuff is pure warring material...wake keeping on guns n roses is one of the most underrated slews ever.
yeah it's a bit of a generalisation and i said it expecting for it to get a bit of a reaction (grimeforum thread is reassuringly dismissive, wouldn't have it any other way really ;)) - they definitely were divisive tho, like i said, my cousin from bedford and all his mates hated them. there were definitely circles where they never got the same respect as ppl like titch who were harder but obviously not as good, and that sort of sentiment existed on rinse's forums and rwd forum too.

very big piece from tom! much needed bump for rapid's productions.. and true about that transition from the quicksilver melodies of weezer to 'r u double f'!!! i'm sure i've said this before, but the latter was the epiphanic tune that made me realise it was more than just diz and wil and that actually, this was my new religion. as it were.

follow up from word the cat with more ruff sqwad http://www.wordthecat.com/goku/2009/06/03/re_vision_ism-got-a-casio-watch-its-nothing/

yeah is matter just an unutterably shit venue? i want to see ms dynamite tho!

skepta's album makes me want to weep it's so weak. that transformers track is as pointless, trite, and forgettable as everything else on there. *puts on reign freestyle*

Yeah fair play - it's not like i know any proper road guys in real life anyway:D

big up tom for taking the time to write this but it's just not accurate to say ruff squad had no road support just because simon silver dollar was pushing them.

Hmm, you could've researched a bit deeper. Saying your cousin was always more into Devlin back in the day makes it look like you don't know what you're talking about for one: I don't think Devlin existed on the scene until 2005/2006.

Also, to be on the safe side, probably best not to bring in what is and isn't "road" next time.

I'm surprised you feel this way! It's hilarious! and delivered so matter-of-factly. This track is totally archetypical of one of my favourite elements of grime music - its humour. The Adenuga brothers have always been good at this sort of thing. Jammer too, actually.

skepta's album makes me want to weep it's so weak.

Not so surprised about this though. Haven't heard the whole thing yet, but after Greatest Hits and his increasingly weak performances on radio since its release, that doesn't surprise me.

Speaking of the Adenugas though, JME's Famous kind of flopped didn't it? Or did it? JME is meant to make quite good numbers on his CDs, afaik.

tbf martin i didn't really say that.

erm...

"not that many people seemed to rate them. The people that did were, generally, middle class dudes who used to write blogs about grime... Ruff Sqwad always came hard, but for some reason seemed to appeal to the middle class more than they did the streets."

that kind of opinion-before-evidence is positively Reynoldsian! ;)

Nah it sold well and he did the tour off the back of it as well. Just because we don't care doesn't mean that no-one else does I guess.

A much better recommendation, in my eyes, for a Ruff Sqwad compilation is this DJ Furious compilation of Rapid beats. Quality is a lot better and Furious holds it up well.

I like Personal Bliss Enducers but the bitrates kill my ears.

I actually didn't think it was that bad. Not as good as his mixtapes. Did anyone here go to one of these tour dates? Or know someone who did? I'd be interested to know how many people JME pulls to a concert and what sort of crowd he pulls, especially off the back of his album. I have no way of gauging this living abroad, and I don't think grimeforum will be much help either. I know probably about two years ago he was playing shows in places like Hatfield (well, no like about it really, he played in Hatfield.)

it's not really a case of research - 90% of what i listened to from like 04 to 07 was grime. most of the records i mention in the piece i've got.

the devlin thing, he was maybe around a little bit before that, when he was dead young. it was a dodgy example to use, but there was definitely a sentiment amongst ppl i knew at that time and ppl i'd spoken to or worked with that ruff sqwad weren't that real compared to roadside gs or titch or whatever. this was when i discovered blogs like silverdollar/woebot etc in early 05 and half the reason why i liked them so much was cos they had a different take on it. that sentiment was definitely expressed in certain corners of rwd forum/rinse forum too.

martin you're obviously right that there's no real evidence in the piece bar my memory of ppl's opinions at the time, but you're also exaggerating - i never said they didnt have love on road, look at the ppl they've shared sets with etc. i just said that it seemed they were more rated by the blogger sect than they were the wider spectrum of grime fans. i also said it was a bit of a generalisation (not that that's an excuse, obviously!).

i do regret writing it tho (i had a feeling i would), not because i think it's wrong, but because it's distracted from the actual records, which i intended to be a bit of a springboard for some discussion of ruff sqwad in their prime. i didn't know about that furious comp btw slackk- nice one. have pmed you too.

Yeah, I went to the one at the academy. It was about 2/3 full, quite a varied crowd- your standard grime fans, a load of younger girls and lads, some indie kids. I was a bit fucked but Elijah might be able to do a bit better than me, he was there was well.
