I think I like it because he allows himself to become a bit more unhinged in it - there are the usual great comic characters but there is a great interest in obsession - sexual, monetary which he develops more fully than in his other work. And the golden dustman is a fabulous character.

I've only Little Dorrit and Curiosity Shop to compare it to, but Dickens definitely seems more experimental and scathing here. I learned my lesson with the last two, so am avoiding Googling any characters or developments in case I run into spoilers again.

As before, feel a bit gutted I came to Dickens so late. I blame sappy TV adaptations: it's crazy how so many of them filtered out the black humour and dissections of social interactions he's so good at

I've got Penman's Satie book. It's always a pleasure to read about the Beautiful Epoch. However, pointing out that Satie is one letter from satire adds nothing of any relevance.

I've just got to the bit where he tells the reader that "furniture" includes "urn" and "future". Yes you're right, well spotted, but why leave out "fun", "unit", etc and Satie used the word "ameublement" anyway. I fail to see why he includes such stuff.
