It would be interesting to trace the fashion upticks in terms of social crisis.

So there was a lot of this sort of thing around the in 1980s which was an apocalyptic time in terms of nukes and the AIDs crisis. But as @martin pointed out this was mainly because military clothing was cheap and durable. There was an aesthetic aspect but I think this was just as much about subverting military imagery. Or perhaps being militaristically anti-military.

More recently the uptick has come from cosplay stuff as @mrfaucet says but is also tied with the rise of the alt-right and to a certain extent BLM. These guys in Brixton made the tabloids shit their pants:



Also the image of the Antifa super-warrior in the right wing imaginary in the US.

As others have pointed out the military garb of the Capitol building occupiers did them little favours. The extreme anti-mask beliefs made them easily identifiable and the military costumes (even the equipment) was just that in the end - there didn't seem to be much strategy to back it up.

i was on my way to a party once and took a pill before and i'm in the subway and at this one stop an entire group of sex party fetishist people enter the wagon. one of them was wearing one of those latex suit that literally covered her entire body except for a hole where her mouth was. on top of her head was a chain and a guy dressed as a fox was escorting her around cos obviously she couldn't see anything either. the pill kicks in and i'm looking at all those horror characters and it ruined my mood for the rest of the night, i kept feeling sorry for the woman trapped in that suit. latex frightens me.
