Nice! look forward to listening.

Woebot's recent piece piqued my curiosity about this stuff...

Hope you dig it. This is a preliminary mix for an "elite" mix club I belong to, so feedback is appreciated while there's still time to change/adjust.

Enjoyed this. I know virtually nothing about the genre and was suprised at how 'pop' it all was. Reminds me of Yello or Yazoo in places...

will get back to you... thanks!!

just noticed that the mix is called ...1981 ... every track is from 1981... and your screen name is 1981! what is the significance if you don't mind me asking?

I was... 6 years old at the time :)

Just a bad habit I've developed over the last few years. I'd say music from the "post-punk era" makes up maybe 15% of my listening, but for whatever reason, as far as mix-making goes, that's the gospel I've most often preached the last few years. That culminated in making a 10-CD, 460-band box set of post-punk music from 1981.

Loving this mix, thanks! Agree with Driod, it's definitely popier than I had expectected, really quite catchy throughout. And holy crap that last song! Sounds like ravey second-wave detroit techno, except it's about 10 years too early and a few bpms too slow. wicked. Actually, the synths kick ass throught the mix, come to think of it...

"And holy crap that last song!"

Yeah right, just wish it was longer, I thought that the one before it was great/weird until I heard that. I'll have to try and pick it up I think...
Other good ones: I really liked the 1000 Ohm thing, catchy with a disco-ish kind of feel. Also the first one had a kind of no-wave sound to it I thought.
All pretty listenable.

Yeah, gotta say the synthy numbers are doing it for me: the last one, 10000 ohms and my favorite - the Beranek track. Who is (are) Beranek? No info on discogs.

I expected it to be a mix like a "salad dressing" kind of mix not a "trail mix" kind of mix if you know what I mean.

that sounds like a MONSTER. all from 1981? but surely not all German? is it out or will it be out soon?

a friend of mine who I passed this mix to was just saying that this stuff needs to be made available to the rest of the world.

thanks again for the download.

Glad you're digging it, all.

As for expected homogenaeity of DNW--I think just like most of the music that shared the post-punk spirit, it's pretty broad, from what I can tell. I'm hardly an expert.

Neonbabies at the least deserve some proper reissues, heard outside of Germany. For my money, they run circles around Liliput and Delta 5 and other "girl bands" who've gotten much more attention.

I expected to like the electro/pop stuff, but I was surprised at how good some of the slightly more "rock" bands are--Kitchen & The Plastic Spoons, Valerie Desperiez, Matthias Schuster, Grauzone, they all put to shame most of the UK/US/NZ/AU Go4/Joy Division wannabees.

The 1981 set wasn't all German. I broke it down once, but I've now forgotten--something like 50% UK, 30% US, 20% Continent/Japan/elsewhere. I was making copies for about six or seven months that went all over the world, but for now I've put it to rest--it's just a lot of work and I haven't got time or money. But maybe someday.
