Good question!

PD, do you know which mixtape the lox and BIG song youll see is on? ive been trying to find the song on p2p networks but cant get it anywhere and i suddenly want to hear it a lot.

It was on an old ass DJ Clue tape, an old DJ S&S tape, an old DJ Double RR & G Bo The Pro tape, a think Kid Capri made a tape with it but either Tony Touch or Doo Wop had it as well...that had to be around 1996, though? That would be a tough find even for me....One.

Diddy's #1

The final numbers are in and Lloyd Banks moved 150,000 units of "Rotten Apple". He's going to have a HELL of a time going Gold. G Unit is clearly on the way down. Next up, Diddy's "Press Play" is projected to sell 175,000- 200,000 it's opening week. Let's see how it goes.

In other news, Lady Sovereign was #1 on TRL, beating out Justin Timberlake and Pink with that goddawful song with the weird ass video. WTF is going on? One.

Here's Diddy's sales numbers for "Press Play" this past week:

-- 1 DIDDY BAD BOY/ATLANTIC/ATL G 176,332 --
PRESS PLAY

Hi Tek sold a surprising 27,000 units of his indie album as well. While Diddy has a tough task it going Gold, he has an ace in the hole, though...a second single with Christina Aguilera that might break more than the opening single did. The album has some surprisingly good material on it as well...I still won't buy it, though. Lloyd Banks sales dropped 68% in his second week moving him from 3rd to 16th on the Billboard charts..It's official now..G Unit is dead as a monopoly. Young Buck can't even save it with "Buck The World". I'd like to see it all come down like the walls of Jericho, personally. LOL. One.

If I was given a major label A&R position and I had to sign a British act (or group) my priority list would look like this:

1. Kano
2. Wiley
3. JME
4. Roll Deep
5. Klashnekoff (or entire crew, Kyza, Jehst, etc.)

If I had enough money to buy out Dizzee Rascal's contract, I'd do it as well. JME wouldn't be as hard a sell as you think to Americans. Shit, I could do it EASY. One.

I disagree with all of those except JME, who is probably my #1 choice, although even he I don't think would have longevity in the US market, and would achieve the flash-in-the-pan status that Dizzee recieved, and that Sov invariably will (except Sov will return to her neglected homeland and will not be able to rebound her career there).

Kano I'd agree with a couple of years ago before he threw himself into the delusion that he was on some kind of next commercial level and beyond everybody else. Kano blows my mind because he asserts this kind of celebrity status that Dizzee has, but he's nowhere close to Dizzee's level of success in terms of creative output, or in album sales. He's sort of in this limbo of neglecting the UK Grime scene, and being neglected by the mainstream market.

As for Roll Deep... are you mad? Did you hear their album? I think if you wrote a 60 page book on what makes a commercially successful record and read it TO them, they still would go into the studio with grand delusions of "making it big" and come out with "Shake A Leg" again.

I DEFINITELY want Roll Deep as a crew...if they were taken out of having to try to make a successful album, but just make a concise LP PERIOD...they would craft a classic. Kano and Dizzee have enough talent lyrically that can't denied a la Klashnekoff and his crew. JME would be a "personality" guy...something that is very neccessary. Remember that their perception in the UK has NO BEARING on how they can be spun/marketed to US urban audiences. Some would work better on the underground and some are EASILY ready for primetime now. One.

All I'm saying is that "Roll Deep as a crew" is a hard thing to ask for. Roll Deep consists of over 10 MCs, where they constantly use their weaker MCs over their stronger ones (e.g. the album consists of mostly Wiley with Scratchy, Breeze, Brazen and Flo Dan). As for getting them to make a strong "underground" album, that would be ideal I agree, but if they were able (or willing) to do that 2 years ago, maybe grime wouldn't be as fucked as it is now.

Lastly, I live in Canada. I'm not talking about Roll Deep from a UK perspective.

Ok

That would explain why you throw parties in Toronto. LOL. But I was just commenting on how in America they'd be new artists...I'm sure it'd be though to get the entire crew though considering their sheer numbers. I put up a new blog an hour ago, here it is:

“What The Hell Is “Real Hip Hop” Anyways? AKA Lyrics Don’t Move Units” is an essay disscussing the true meaning of the phrase “real hip hop” and it’s usage.

Real hiphop is one of those funny phrases some people use to shut some people out.

I always thought it was a terrible sign when there was the resurgence of the talk of the five pillars of hiphop etc, or the hiphop/rap distinction. An appeal to the essence of the culture's beginnings, but also the trap of orthodoxy.

The gangster theme in hiphop is fascinating given America's long-standing love affair with the figure of the outlaw. In a sense the gangster represents the polar opposite of the fore-fathers and their egalitarian ideas. He illustrates the lie of US culture, reacting against its supposed ideals. Thats why I went completely nuts for that Mobb Deep album Amerikaz Nightmare, because they capture it so well, on so many levels... even in the title, its the dark side of the American Dream.

Great beats too :)

NEW CLIPSE? ? ?? Who produced it?

Also, I'm sorry, but Rick Ross' "Blow" is ill.

Are you serious?

NEW CLIPSE? ? ?? Who produced it?

Also, I'm sorry, but Rick Ross' "Blow" is ill.

It's a given that any track The Clipse are on will be produced by The Neptunes. Secondly, I can't bring myself to put the words "Rick Ross" and "ill" in the same sentence...unless, of course it's structured in this manner:

Rick Ross makes me ill.

But to each his own. LOL. One.

so what's the consensus on the new jay-z and nas tracks?

lving "kingdom come" to death. not so much "show me what you got", i have a bit of a hard time getting with the session player drumming. "lost ones" is nice as well.

RR's lyrics are AWFUL, that's why they're FUNNY, and the PRODUCTION is GREAT.

Yeah, you can laugh. But I'm not about "authenticity" in any music. I like me the hip-pop just as much as I like Cam'Ron and Jim Jones or whatever people think is more authentic than the Dade County bunch.

The Neptunes I figured finally made enough money to sit down and be moguls and leave the top 40 alone for a while. Guess not.
