i like the way you outline this through clippings, impressions. it's not apocalyptic, which seems to be the tendency nowadays. but there is a sense things are moving, shifting, which is just as unsettling.

tectonic activity here is an almost banal, daily thing. sometimes it's very light, other times very intense, a reminder of where one stands in the scheme of things. each time the building sways i smile and wonder if this is it, it can't be helped. incidentally, my flatemate says he feels a surge along his spine a bit before each quake.

Japan Sinks Pt. 2

Today Part 2 of Sakyo Komatsu's '70's classic disaster novel Japan Sinks was released .
At the end of Pt. 1 , the Japanese race has been scattered across the world following the earthquakes and volcano actions that totally destroy the island.
Rding this bk in the early '80's made quite an impression ,
what starts out as a crack observed in a wall while leaning over a drinking fountain ends up with almost everyone airlifted , boated off of Japan in time before it all goes under.
In one sequence , the scientists and Gov. are assembled to watch the real time , full length visualization of the island as it is racked by quakes , various fault lines and mountains exploding showing red , red , red until the 'Dragon' is decimated , broken into pieces .

In the end , the last piece of Japan goes under and all the birds have no place to go ,
so there is a cloud of homeless birds above the last point that went under ...

Now in Pt.2 the Japanese are living in many different countries - though i can guess not too many got relocated to the closest countries - China or the Korea's .
Author Komatsu was so shocked by the Kobe quake that he was sic for years and enlisted the help of a younger author to help him get this new one down in print.

The Kobe quake was big , and my wife and I happened to go there within in some months of it.
The big highway was still turned over and cut off , and after lunch we sat in a small park as near to the district that burned down as we wanted to go.
All was peaceful and quiet , but as we sat we noticed movement around the perimeter of the green .
Unclaimed , unkempt and hungry cats all around, scratching a lonely living for the next while at least .

Imagine a whole major country going under in our lifetimes ,
not likely - but possible.
S Pacific islands being the most likely

I was just thinking, while reading through this thread....
It's sort of sad how even discussing the Future as a concept feels really quaint now.
It's like everyone has accepted that we don't really have a clue what's going to happen.

And as I have shown I am not presenting any 'only' future ,
merely showing what is going on now that can shape what futures we may have.
And yes, i think most people prolly find the idea of the future 'quaint' -
that is sad as it it still being shaped every day , every 'good' new idea , possible new directions.
Then out of those who 'think' or 'talk' about it , only a few choose to really participate in the zeitgeist
at any given time .
It's not easy to even just 'keep going' !

And Bassn, yes, every day , every minute , every second it all is moving,
luckily not EVERY day brings an earthquake or moments when we can feel it .
But if you live in Indonesia the period from the Christmas quake to the big one in May and now continuing
has to be unnerving.
How many times can you rebuild ?

Life WITH the CCP

Some observations on China past/present /future from Wu Chentao & Chen Guidi's
"Will The Water Sink The Boat" , banned by Chinese Gov. Propaganda Dept. :

Some Stories from rural China:
The village Chef who murders the man who wanted to audit the village's books ...
The town leader who convinced the townspeople to plant Mulberry bushes because he thought he could get rich off of selling them seeds ...
The CCParty Boss who makes up an excuse to call in troops to put down a tax revolt ...

It's all in the Overhead'
Bk in Han Dynasty times (206 BC -AD8) there were 8,000 people living in rural China for each Gov. 'crat.
1987 - 67 people to each 'crat
1998 - 40 for each

Now, while some high officials supposedly 'sleep with the banned book by their beds' to 'remind them
of the people's plight' ,
the '90's rural tax burden is replaced by the '00's land grab by officials as the Real Estate boom
took hold
