Over on the pirate station Rinse FM, things were getting intellectual. “Technology . . . globalisation . . . I’m part of a worldwide community,” mused DJ Alexander Nut. “I’m communicating with everything in the universe, using the medium of . . . in the very broadest, sonic sense . . . hip-hop . . .”

seen! out to antonia quirke :) -not the first time rinse has appeared in the NS radio column either, i wrote the whole thing on it once http://www.newstatesman.com/radio/2007/08/pirate-stations-music-internet - i had to miss carnival to stay in and listen to rinse all weekend for that, lol.

Does anyone remember the old DnB track that samples the same string part from Derrick May's 'Interval 1' as is used in King Midas Sound - One Ting (Dabrye Remix)? For some reason I think the track may have been on Reinforced, but I'm not really sure of that.

and here's the original sample:

Big thanks to DJ ML on Subvert Central. I knew I hadn't made it up (I have the tune on vinyl)!

^^ I keep having to check in on this thread because people keep talking about stuff I like in here that I never thought was dubstep... :)

I guess I posted all that in here because that King Midas Sound thing is on Hyperdub, although the remix isn't dubstep, and I guess Hyperdub isn't strictly just a dubstep label...

Yeah, not trying to be a pain, I'm more laughing at myself. I've been a "grr, grr, dubstep sucks" guy for years, basically since when it seemed to diverge fully from s2step.

If dubstep now covers a wide enough range of stuff that I don't hate all of it anymore, that's pretty great. :D

yeah ufo was wicked, was great to hear that joy orbison tune out on the pp system, and a couple of james blake bits he played (including an a milli remix) were really good. hatcha's 2004 set was crazy. i thought distance was kinda shitty, he played a remix of faithless (!), which was my cue to go outside and smoke until hatcha came on. proper mad shit going on in little hanoi next door too.

i honestly couldn't tell you, i don't think i know that tune, i didn't know dubstep in 2004 so pretty most of the tunes he played were new to me. it all sounded proper tough and percussive.
