jakes hench mixtape
this starts off really good i think, quite inventive, but ends up descending into the usual mid range type stuff.

Track 3 - Dope Fiend Lean

fucking gigantic sample from The Wire!!! get in Jakes! really hope this gets a vinyl release.

weird that it doesn't sample Bubbles, whose the one who says about doing the 'dope fiend lean'. Although that woman's speech at the NA meeting is from the same episode.

edit:

Track 4 - Loved Up

there's the Bubbs quote!

Wire samples in music>>>

the first 5 or 6 tracks on there are really great imo. big, fat, grimey/electro-y dubstep. shame about what happens later on but never mind.

is there anymore from addison groove about? i like the footcrab and dumbshit but wouldnt mind if they were a bit rawer. this is like what id expect from hessle doing juke. wouldnt mind hearing what say, someone like benga would do with it. well the benga of '06, not necessarily '10. or jakes or joker.

speaking of jakes and that lot:

mensah remix is the best of the 3.

FWD looks good for thursday. Is it likely to be queues around the block again?

i'ld say

the one with kode9 a month ago, i got to pp just after 10 and there was a massive q down to the off licence.

it's a 9.30 job tomorrow if you wanna see the first dj

Seriously looking forward to the Afrika Hitech album dropping. The viral radio show with Pritchard hasn't been off my player. Love the grimey/technoey/jungley bits. He's one of the best producers around atm.

well yeah. hes always about isnt he? on that kiss dubstep special thing, at the tate, at the rbma, doing specials with gilles peterson, of the original dubstep lot, id say hes one of the most high profile, compared to someone like loefah. obviously, skream and benga too, theyre the biggest names in terms of playing club sets, but mala isnt some shy recluse lol.

edit - i found some more addison groove btw for anyone interested - he did a mix for MAH's show thats on the iplayer. not bad. though did almost send me to sleep at times. prefer those new juke mixes posted in the juke thread.

All about pride and egos
visible in what sense? you mean like high profile?

(no sendage!)

Yeah, really. I can only really speak for what it is like over here in North America, but now that dubstep has become a household name, loads more people have gotten into it but know nothing at all about shit like Mala. As far as they are concerned, Datsik, Excision, Caspa, Rusko, 16 Bit = dubstep.

Most of the people here who rate Mala are the same people who rated him years ago.

over here though, in terms of original guys still doing it, hes one of the most visible, if not quite either a kode 9 (ie hyperdub tracks on nme comps etc) or caspa/rusko sides of dubstep (at fabric, pulling in punters at festivals etc). this new album should solidify it i think.

interesting mala interview - its funny, for everything he says about not wanting to be part of the machine etc (and i believe him), hes actually one of the most visible producers from dubstep lol.
weirdly, no questions about the album. :(

Regarding the lack of questions about Return II Space, it was a bit of a difficult one as Mala doesn't want anyone to know what's actually on the record until it hits the shops, therefore making it hard to ask specific questions about the material. I did ask a couple of Qs about the significance of the album title and how he went about selecting the tracks, but the answers weren't necessarily as insightful as his other answers and I had to cut the transcript down from about 5k to 2.5k.

Oh, and as with Shackleton, he's uncomfortable with it being called an album. It is just six tracks, after all.
Yeah he should have made that a bit clear, wouldn't want people to think it was like a concept album or anything: him on the cover in some large concept device that spans the whole album or some such.

Dubstep concept albums - I look forward to this development.

No, you look forward to someone doing it successfully, not to the 30+ other artists that will inevitably follow with lowering degrees of success.

Ah, New Zealand has this problem too, however we've got a recent and depressing local development in the form of "Mt Eden Dubstep". Recently it's gotten so bad that people (read: 18yr olds) have begun asking for some "Mt Eden" or some "dubstep" in clubs, not realising that there is a genre outside of young Mr Mt Eden's work (Mt Eden is a suburb in AKL).
He has achieved such popularity via an ingenious youtube campaign of blatantly dubbing over pop music with new drums and horrid synths.
His most popular song has over 4 million views, which is about the population of NZ.
You lot can research it more if you want, but it's a very cringe worthy bastardisation that's causing local DJs no end of greif.
