"You're kidding? I thought Kovac could've been arrested."
I thought it was reckless rather than malicious. His arm hit Cole's head but I don't think there was any deliberate movement of the arm towards him, he was jumping for the ball is all. I seemed to be in the minority in the pub though when I voiced that sentiment.

At first I thought it was a deliberate forearm smash, then from another angle it was clearly a leading elbow. The other centre half should've gone too, for his bodycheck on Rooney, a sequel to the one that put Walcott off the pitch.

Champions League

So, Liverpool v Marseille was a good game I thought. Lots of chances and some good goals, maybe wouldn't be so happy about the defending if I was a supporter of either side.
Didn't see Chelsea but looks as though they ran riot. They are looking depressingly strong at the moment and Deco was such a great signing at about half the price that couldn't prise Barry away from Villa.
Are "English" clubs going to dominate like last year when in the knock out round only other PL clubs could defeat them? It's harder to stay ahead than to get ahead but how much stronger have the continental sides become?
What happened to Roma? Bet that result didn't go down to well. Maybe they're just so desperate to avoid being humiliated by United again that they have decided to deliberately not get through.

OM looked really good - lots of neat passing and pace up front. The No 7 - Cheryou (sp?!) looked very useful, threading passes to forwards on the same wavelength. I don't think many will go down to Marseilles and pick up many points - the matches against Athletico should be worth watching.

Liverpool's first was a very special goal - a 'did I really just see that?' moment.

Chelsea are impressive - which makes Tottenham's solitary point even more galling.

Be interested to see if Arsenal are going to actually play the way they do in the prem, although gong to Russia is not a great way to start their campaign.

Man Utd - Ronaldo is back and it will be interesting to see if he palys alongside Tevez, Rooney and Berbs - if so, a very tasty prosepect.

what has happened to Italian sides - I know the scandals of the past few seasons have taken their toll but they cannot afford to ahve another poor showing or Serie A teams will not attract the Kakas of the game.

Cheyrou was man of the match by a distance, I thought. I now understand why Houllier thought Bruno Cheyrou was the "new Zidane". He just bought the wrong brother for Liverpool. Dunno what happened to liverpool in the 2nd half - they looked shagged and just could't keep the ball. If they'd carried on like the 1st half, it could've been a nice 5-3 win.

It's a shame ITV don't run a decennt highlights prog - Cruj's goals were great, really smart finishing, and i love to see if the rest of the team were really that good.

I saw the second half of Arsenal's and United's games yesterday. From what I could see Arsenal missed some sitters in the first half and were then knocked out of their stride by an outrageous penalty in the second. After that Kiev started looking good and moving the ball around but it was only fair that Arsenal got the equaliser in the end. Given their first half dominance it doesn't seem like that great a result but in the grand scheme of things it's probably a useful point.
United continued their sluggish start to the season, were pressing hard at the end when Villareal had obviously settled for a point and it always looked possible that United would manage to grab one although they didn't have enough ideas to make it certain. Again, not a disastrous result as long as they pick up points against the other sides which on last nights showing shouldn't be too difficult. Pretty hilarious that the ref sent the wrong guy off for Aalborg.

"Two at once? You must have been in this legendary football pub...

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs...toke_Newington

I got a Sky package on the cheap the other week, paying an extra £10/month for Sky Sports 1. Turns out the Champions League live games are on SS 2 and 3, the utter, utter cunts."
Nah, was in the Birdcage on Columbia Road (just being playing football in Haggerston) - they had a big screen for the Arsenal match and a small one for the Man Utd game. Nice pub that actually with very friendly staff.
On Tuesday I watched the Liverpool game in the O'Neill's in Holborn right next to the Masonic lodge thing. It's surprisingly not a bad place to watch sports, not as annoyingly chain feeling as most of the O'Neill's of which I'm aware and it has loads of screens showing all the games that are on plus table service! Also not too full unlike all the other places around there which were filled with wankers (ie people who were in the seats that I wanted) - bet it's mental in there when they have the shinty or gaelic football though.
Re two at once - when I was in the US it seemed as though everywhere had about a million tvs showing all different sports and nobody taking any interest in any of them. One restaurant even had little tvs in the booths, showing films or just normal tv while you were eating just in case watching the bastardball on the big screens while talking to your mates and eating dinner wasn't enough to overwhelm your senses.

Most American team sports move so slowly, you only need to look up once in a while (unless it's basketball, which moves very quickly, but where each score is utterly inconsequential). I kinda like it, actually, so long as it's baseball.

Was at Old Trafford for this last night. Good atmosphere, boring game.

Yeah me too. Shame there were so few Villareal fans there (there must have been 50 tops!). The away fans usually make the place jump. Can't wait for the Celtic home game.

We just look a bit flat at the moment. We are playing ok but lacking a spark and creativity. Hopefully we'll step up against Chelsea and that will kickstart us.

Or not. Today's was weirdly like last week's game against Liverpool - Utd dominant for 20 mins, then overrun and, in this case, lucky not to lose. dunno what it is about them - the defence is solid enough (dodgy keeper and an off-the-pace Neville excepted) and the front line always looks threatening, even when they flatter to deceive.

But the midfield seems lightweight as fuck. Chelsea were the better side by a distance without playing particularly well and if their crosssing had been more consistent (and Anelka less dreadful), it would've been a comfy win.

I didn't think Chelsea were the better side by a distance, although they did dominate possession in the 2nd half, especially given the number of good chances we missed in the first half. It could easily have been 3-1 to us at half time.

I think we sat back too much after the goal and tried to counterattack them which as a mistake as we were on top and overrunning them.

I still can't believe we managed to pick up 7 bookings today, with only two bad challenges (the neville and rooney ones). Good old Mike Riley.

Surprised by this analysis. I was only able to watch the first half but United definitely were on top throughout that period. Thought 1-0 was fair at that point - obviously can't comment on the second half though - maybe it swung round.

Am I being unduly harsh on United? Oh well, wouldn't be the first time. I'd stand by the bulk of that, though - I think this here is a pretty fair analysis.

What's up with Van Der Saar though? He looks as though he is lacking in confidence and seemed almost relieved to come off.

He was poor against Liverpool too. Maybe he's just getting on. I don't think he's been at his peak since he first arrived at Utd, but he's got a great defence in front of him and there's a dearth of really good keepers in the Premiership (Cech hasn't been the same since Hunt blundered into him; England's No.1 was responsible for half of a 6-0 tonking yesterday), so he's been left looking good by compairson.

Yeah, he's looking shaky at the moment. I think he's been the best keeper Utd have had since Smeichael and he's done alright but I'm wondering if he's lost it now. There don't seem to be many good keepers around though, you're right.
