i hear that about the cia all the time, but is it true? where's the proof? (i'm actually asking here, i'm interested, not trying to put it down.)
where's the proof?
the CIA is the grandaddy of all drug dealers.
I am generally against prohibition and I am sure the new laws will be used in dubious ways (e.g. another weapon to harrass clubs and squats which don't enforce the law). Ultimately though I am swayed by another libertarian argument - that people should be able to go out dancing or drinkng without being forced to inhale other people's smoke. This is quite different to other drugs (including alcohol) where there isn't a direct impact on other people in the same way - other than sometimes leading to some annoying behaviour.
I never understood why there had to be a law banning it everywhere. It seems reasonably popular to have nonsmoking bars/clubs, why couldn't some voluntarily ban it?
Because it's mainly about protecting people who work in bars from noxious gas, not punters who can choose to be there.
But if some bars were smoking and some not, then people who don't want to breathe smoke (but still wanted bar work) could simply work in non-smoking bars. It's not as if jobs are in desperately short supply at the moment.
Something else that's happened since the introduction of the ban is the sight of people who work in bars nipping outside to have a cigarette on their break because the law has banned smoking in their workplace 'for their own wellbeing'.![]()

why shouldn't businesses have the right to own and operate spaces that have smoking and non-smoking sections, so long as they have completely distinct air supply and ventilation?
I agree here, this law is too blanket, went to see the Bug/Shackleton/Kode9 last night at Plastic People, it was crying out for a mist of skunk in there, all i could smell was persil automatici'm not a smoker but i'm beginning to miss those hazy smokey atmospheres.
i'm fine with the ban, but honestly wonder why in America we didn't do a split scenario:
why shouldn't businesses have the right to own and operate spaces that have smoking and non-smoking sections, so long as they have completely distinct air supply and ventilation?
that's my two cents on that
Persil Automatic? You are lucky, I went to FWD a couple of weeks ago and all I could smell was the toilets.I agree here, this law is too blanket, went to see the Bug/Shackleton/Kode9 last night at Plastic People, it was crying out for a mist of skunk in there, all i could smell was persil automatici'm not a smoker but i'm beginning to miss those hazy smokey atmospheres.
I haven't been down since the smoking ban.I find the thought of a 'smoke free' Forward>> hard to contemplate.![]()
It's effecting everything I think. Went to see Skream play Fabric last Friday, and when there's no smokey haze around the main room it's just all the clearer that everybody there's a bastard. The minute he went off, Pendulum (ack) came on and this onslaught of people hit the floor, pushing anyone they could out the way to get a sight of them. If everyone had just been a little stoned (passively or not), I don't know if that would've happened...it's really effecting dubstep though imo.
