Maybe that's it.... I remember watching it and my friend came in and he was tripping and he'd some sort of incident and he was all hyped up and almost in tears and I was going watch this and he was going "Nonnn Reeesharrrd" (he's French) and eventually he sort of agreed and he started watching it and it kinda sucked him in and made everything all right again somehow. Might count as a receptive state.

What is it about Stalker, though, what makes it enamate intensity like it does? It's beautiful and philosophical and all that but that doesn't begin to cover it does it?

Watching it feels like taking a point of no return step forwards in human consciousness.
It's true that, even though basically nothing happens and it's load of people talking as they walk through an abandoned nuclear factory, it has some kind of power that hits a lot of people hard. Although admittedly there are a few who go "eh what, nothing happens, booooring".

Watching a film called Cherry 2000 - the protagonist has hired a Tracker to take him into The Zone... albeit to find a replacement sex robot rather than to unlock the secrets of his soul.

I wonder if Tarkovsky ever saw this film... he would have been apoplectic... possibly he did and it's what really killed him.

Watched Nostalghia again the other night. Amazing film. The dripping water, the long full frontals and first person views, everything moving in place—the horses, the bicycles. The candle scene in the drained bath. The incredible closing shot of his home in the cathedral.

Want to watch Mirror next off @padraig (u.s.) rec

But we make raids, sorties, find precious bits of junk, bring them back. Each time, a little more familiar, a little more sure of ourselves, but the dangers are omnipresent and life threatening. And there's a hint of some deeper danger, something like radiation. Something mutating the cells. Deeper damage the longer the stay there. Altered by it.
just seen this, the best tarkovsky criticism ive ever read

I got Stalker and Ivan's Childhood on Blu-ray recently. I've seen Stalker and was just replacing an old DVD, but haven't seen the latter yet; looks good though,

I wasn't expecting much from the Soderbergh Solaris with Clooney but was pleasantly surprised. Some interesting touches. Hints of a Blade Runner-esque world back on Earth, but only ever glimpsed through blurred windows and off to the side. The slipping between past, present and memory reminded me of Arrival.

There's a scene where Clooney dreams, or maybe actually encounters, a reanimated corpse that came off like a nod to the Mystery Man in Lost Highway.

Finally watched this last night. It looks incredible, but it didn't make much of an emotional impact. The characters weren't fleshed out enough to really feel like people and it wasn't always clear what was supposed to be happening or what the relationship between them was.

He definitely had it from early on though. Some of the shots he chooses, the angles, the way the light moves through a room. It immediately stands out.
