Someone like Mike Thurston doesn't strike me as a guy who'd have gone into music or film in another time. He's a salesman, not an artist.

yeah sort of but they're old now. old cities. lots of things established and set in stone. and the numbers aren't the same. dubai is at least 90% migrants and most of them moved there in the last 20 years
Not even close in terms of diversity tho. Lot of bengali labourers and burger cooks. Ukrainian prostitutes and fillipino nannies. But nothing remotely like london or new york for range. But unusual for how the slave labour far outnumbers the native layabouts

dunno. to me the most noticable thing about dubai is that it's everyone from everywhere. no-one there is from there. and the everywhere is expansive

It's funny seeing people from the UK who moan about immigration and Islam moving over there. They're ending up in these luxury enclaves where they don't have to interact with anyone they don't want to, so I suppose it's logically consistent, but still... You're worried about the influence of Islam in daily life and you don't want to live according to a legal system informed by it, so you move to Dubai where it's the state religion and the majority of people aren't English...
