North retiring, legend

Monster legs, power, pace, step off both feet, a coach’s dream

As an ex-flanker this gets him free pints at the forwards drinking table in Valhalla forever

I suppose along with the sudden improvement of England, Ireland once more choking in a big match and Wales woeful performances is the rise of Italy - long overdue and often been on the wrong side of tight results but this season coming good. Reminiscent of the French in the 70s that mixture of individual flair with some brutish forward play.

superb - Lamaro, Brex, Menoncello, everyone moved the ball beautifully and even left a few points on the park with missed kicks

Late lunch six-n review, Lions tour of Oz before Catalog’s film

Southern hemisphere still leading the game’s thinking, strategic innovations and deep Bok voice “physicality”. Australia are maybe more backs-orientated of south’s big three although Ledesma added bite to the pack. NZ player pool shrinking. SA/Boks are freaks but a frustrating 1-0 equivalent mindset of kick-chase to exploit creaking opponents mistakes works relentlessly well. Argentina continue to evolve but Pacific islanders frustratingly ltd by numbers and continuous poaching

SA’s/Bok strategy compared to, say, Fiji’s all-court unstructured mania is seemingly structurally predictable, anything but in reality. Against France wc23 = top 3 of all time = tries and moments of mindfuck,= taking a scrum for a free kick on their own 22 when they could have kicked to play for territory downfield - every other team in world rugby would‘ve. Boks do Boks, won the scrum penalty, French pack’s confidence cracked and, combined with another insane moment of a charged down conversion, France were out, DuPont and all

“If Plan A fails, go back to Plan A” - old Bok mantra from Highveld to Cape

Not a game of forum significance maybe for class reasons I dunno except .. except .. it could be, for the marriage of strategic straightforwardness, limitless rule nuances/interpretations of a psychotically played game‘s ugly beauty. Nothing like the ugliness of UFC and harm reduction is a huge focus point now. Rugby League took streamlined aspects of the game and built itself around ball in play time, Muggins was raised on union’s specific stop~start set-piece patterns of scrummaging, line outs, smashing/clearing out rucks, dark arts and trying to disable anyone you could. An ex gf kept asking “why do they keep kicking the ball into the crowd? because the crowd are clapping not cheering”. Aye love, nvrmnd..

To avoid six-n gloom, Danny ‘advanced hair studio‘ Care hosts guest spots to “pick a team with a theme” ie ex colleagues, opposition, their preferred or alternative supposed cream since the mid late 90’s, biases, reviews, time lines. By extracting concisely most recent 25 years of players, all picks reflect the modern game in two phases: before/after brain damage from full contact training was (quietly) reduced. Many of the of the picks will die young, stark

Obscene knowledge starter with Nick Evans who played with every class act going and has already improved England fuckloads via Harlequins

Shalk Brits, front row. Hooking is different to propping, again for the pressure of line out throwing, its unique scrummaging role bolting on to two props locked by 2nd rows (neck risks galore). Could have played in the backs at centre with no drop off performance individually or collectively, akin to a front row Botia the Fijian who’s played inside centre/12 and open-side flanker/7 easily one of the most gifted Pacific players to ever play the game. Even if no one’s reading at this point, Brits and Botia = generation defining players. Brits had to contend with Bismarck du Plessis, the ultimate blend of skill, power, speed, bloodlust and skullduggery too ..

Adam Jones, another front row, takes it another route. Ex Lion, talks extremely fast, bit overlap initially but loyal to the last, Jerry Collins anecdotes rip

Last point through the fog of the psychosis of night shifts - pacific islands could do a combined team and tour the northern hemisphere, including France and Georgia, to add stability and needed revenue just as the lions do

Samoa, Fiji and Tonga. 30-33 players to tour, c’mon that’s box-office
