certain jazz might have qualities in common with music i like, but the qualities that generally distinguish it as a genre (soloing, brass instruments, reuse of tunes from the 20s) are annoying and lame to me. in other words: in order to fully embrace a genre you can't just pretend it's something else and embrace the instances that most resemble that other thing. why bother, when the other thing already exists? you need to love its cliches, and as a listener i'm not into the cliches associated with jazz. so there's no reason to listen to jazz when i could be listening to something else.
