i think its prob a survival thing - if DC is going to keep going (and growing) theyre going to have to be a bit more expansive, even if that means losing their initial identity (and grime loses its main/only real club night). did prancehall deejay by the way? the deejay rotation in the main room seemed a bit weird and just seemed to be that same guy with the crap MC for most of the night instead of much of a change up.

sad to hear logan

for me what made dc so amazing (havent been to the last few) was the mc's who'd turn up, swarm the stage and spit. as the audience you kind of knew they werent being paid, they werent billed, it was unpredictable, and there was the real vibe of the mcs "putting the work in", practising and building up a fanbase - i really appreciated that sentiment

then there was the audience which was really into grime and a few journo's, everyone chanting along, so many wheels - it was wicked

Contrary to reports rocky, nothing about what we do has changed. We had 800 people dancing to grime as well as other types of music on Saturday. We had a DJ heavy line-up because a couple of mcs didn’t show, but Wiley, Badness, Lee Brasco, Dizzle Kid all touched mic. A few weeks ago at Ghettos launch at the Rhythm Factory we had about 20 guys touched mic, there was a lyrical war between Ghetto and Frisco and I guess there were more card-carrying grime-to-the-core fans in attendance. That kind of night was never going to work at 93FE a big studenty venue on brick lane….horses for courses innit.

As for payment for artists, well, our first few nights we got a small pittance of a stipend to fund the night. We were able to get mcs because there weren’t any other nights demanding their services, and as you said, this was practice hours for bigger shows (ask jme and skepta who came unbooked to around the first 5 or 6 ica shows). At those nights were the people who went on to run chockablock, urban nerd, mindie, night slugs, tomb crew, do it etc. Those nights as well as DC have created a demand for grime artists, which has raised the fees, which we now pay. We will negotiate and pay on what we are charged like any other business, established grime artists are now commanding fairly decent sums (wiley’s rate per minute on Saturday was impressive) while younger/newer mcs to the game are willing to share the same platform, hone their performance skills for much less.

All fairly obvious stuff, just sometimes needs saying.:D

Is Dirty Canvas moving to 93FE permanently or is there still going to be nights at Rhythm Factory?

The site looks basic right now but it'll get better.

such a big idea this!

i don't really like 93 feet east as a venue, but i had a good time on saturday, and thinking back to the dc where i saw jendor and n.e. (was it?) in a room upstairs at the whitechapel art gallery, with about 30 people in attendance, i was fucking impressed really. 30 people to 800 is not half bad.

also what's the alternative to dc? how would you like to see a 100% pure grime rave in london operate, realistically? what kind of venue? i'm not being provocative, i just genuinely don't know where would be a good venue.

plastic people is still my favourite place in the world to see 'this kind of music'. which is why (a) i have spent two long years bitching about fwd line-ups being too dubsteppy, and (b) jme and maximum on friday was so awesome.

chockablock vs wow at the egg on friday is going to be a lot, as it goes.

I'm guessing there'll be MCs at FWD sunday?

i could very happily watch slimzee roll out the dubs on his own for an hour.. but having said that mcs would be awesome. let's hope skepta/riko/gift/whoever is a bit bored on a sunday night and comes down for that reason... that was one of the great things about thursday fwds, mcs were just a bit idle and thus happy to come down for some practice hours in front of a crowd.

I'm really going to have to reach FWD now I think about it, that plastician set at third base was one of the best things I've seen all year...

Maybe I should start robbing peoples houses to fund all these trips to london

lol i was at that - so empty but jendor and ne smacked it - getting locked off at midnight by the gallery and then straight outta bethnal was on the same night wasnt it
