Im very familiar with the likes of Gary Webb and the investigative strand of conspiracy, but I would argue that these people are successful precisely because they follow established journalistic and investigative principles and dont follow the shotgun approach of conspiracists.

But tell me, in your opinion, what % of of 'conspiranauts' have revealed genuine conspiracies?

I couldn’t quantify, but i'm sure it's a small proportion.
I guess there's a distinction between people who generate the conspiracy theories and those who consume them. Both positions are valid imho (& not necessarily involving mental ill-health), for the reasons i tried to explain in my long post pages back

Please, dont think Im condemning anyone here. Im not saying every conspiracist is mentally ill by a long shot, but I view this as an occupational hazard more than anything else. Lockerbie, P2/Gladio, Iran/Contra/Crack, MK Ultra, MLK, Domestic CIA bio weapons testing etc... if you're of the left and you read, then the list of actual conspiracies is long and distinguished, and IMO, its very important to develop the tools to distinguish between conspiracy and structure, otherwise you end up left adrift in a black sea of endless supposition.

I don't think it's necessary to "smear" as mentally ill someone who believes the Earth is flat, hollow or only a few thousand years old.

Of course, there's a huge spectrum of conspiracy theories, ranging from the obviously delusional to the factually correct.

It must also be added that alongside the inimical success of the propaganda model & confirmation bias news feeds, conspiracism is a large factor in the post-truth economy, with real, possibly devastating consequences for the world.
