Radio Shows You Have Loved

its wonderful. i was interested to find that australian guiness is also very stong (though not nearly as strong as the nigerian at about 6%)
doesn't have quite the same syrupy consistancy though.

i do like the Coopers Stout.

one of my favourite stouts is actually Hercule, a Belgian stunner at about 9% (perhaps i should take this to the beer thread..)

i agree the coopers stout is tremendous, better than the australian guiness and fractionally stronger. i think the bottle has a pleasingly bold design too.
patrick forges show was often better than petersons i think.

i thought i loved that nigerian guinness but i tried some again the other day and it just tasted like a mixture of normal guinness and port.

good description. however if you have only enough money for one beer and you'd like to feel a bit tipsy its the only way to go. unless you too like one of my friends favourite cocktails, special brew with a huge shot of vodka mixed in.

Beast of Burden
I remember John Gaunt having this really weird problem with transvestites. Somehow, it would manage to come up every week. And every time it did he'd just go insane and rant about transvestites for about 20 minutes. He'd say, "I mean, it's just wrong! What are they thinking? Are they sick?" and you'd think, alright, he's winding down now, get another caller on Gaunty, but then he'd start all over again. It's like he made a terrible mistake in the dark corner of a Soho club with a lady called Lola and it scarred him for life. Very entertaining radio. I think he's on Talk Sport now. If anyone is listening to him, and you want a laugh, ring him up and make some reference to transvestites.

I never caught Mike Allen's hiphop shows, but I did listen to his talk show on LBC in the early 90s, along with Robbie Vincent.

Yeah it was quite funny to me that he started doing that. I imagined he was this hardcore hip-hop dude but apparently he wasn't really at first. It's clear he developed a real love and knowledge of the music though. That show was really good!

I remember the 'counselling' phone-ins on LBC, really sick stuff, kind of car crash problem porn. Not as funny as Simon Bates 'Our Tune' though.

I think Coldcut deserve a mention. Solid Steel on Kiss was excellent sometimes, especially when they got other people to do it. ;)

Also Mixing It on Radio 3 used to crack me up. Those guys are on Resonance now.

Solid Steel was wicked.

FSOL did a number of takeover shows on Kiss in the mid 90s, they were absolutely fantastic - a great mix of ambient, techno, film dialogue and soundtracks. There was one from May 93 which was particularly excellent. I still have it spread across the only three tapes I had available to record over at the time, but I think you can download it from the interweb now.

The one-off's and takeover shows were often some of the best things on kiss. There's a great Weatherall and friends one from around 1993. I think the slot was called 'Giving It Up'.

There are still good shows on there, Sama, Pioneer, EZ and many others I'm sure, but it doesn't have the same feeling as the 90s Kiss (I wasn't listening in the 80s unfortunately). I think the vibe of the station changed when they moved from Holloway Road, but there are still great DJs on late nights.

There used to be late night talk shows at night at one point - think it may have been about 94. Caesar the Geezer was on there, and then a guy with a girls name who was quite good, but I can't remember who he was...

I used to record Mark Spivey's show on Trent FM, around 10-12 on Saturday nights 1990-1993. It was an unmixed selection of the latest dance, techno, rave, house and must have been a massive influence on thousands of kids in the E.Midlands like me, 100 miles north of the nearest decent pirate station.
