Sartorial Advice

I thought I'd make this an open thread (pfft) on the matter of clothing, since my particular question is pretty esoteric.

In brief: I need a good winter coat. I need the best winter coat ever.

For reasons I won't go into right now, I may well end up in Chicago in mid-January, where, if I have properly understood, it will be approximately 50 degrees below C. Or something. It'll be cold, anyway. Colder than London.

I don't mind spending a couple of hundred quid or so, and as I may be travelling around quite a bit I would like the coat to be as lightweight as possible. While also as warm as possible. Should I be going for some kind of skiing-type number? Wool? I really don't know where to start, but I know if I walk into a YHA shop or whatever and confess my innocence they'll just try and fleece me. Ahem.

Great thread. I'll be working in SE Asia this winter. I wonder what sunglasses to get. I don't like these really really big ones, too trendy, hence probably already out of fashion once I arrive there. But my sunglasses should nevertheless be communicating a moderate interest in appearing modern and fashionable without going over the top. Suggestions? (PS: I need correcting glasses, thus prevening me from buying 10 for 1 Pound a pop).

a couple of years ago i bought my first puffy, down-filled winter coat and it was one of the best things i ever did. it's unbelievably light compared to other coats i've had (stay the hell away from wool, unless you like carrying forty pounds on your back as you trudge through the snow). it's deceptively light given its warmth - you feel like you should be cold, like you're playing a trick on nature. i don't think i even needed a sweater below -15 or -20. it has a fleece liner and the synthetic outer shell keeps the wind right out. don't worry about looks because fashion hibernates in the winter time.

Excellent thread and bad/good pun.

Not sure I agree that fashion hibernates in the winter time (xpost) - surely a good, fashionable coat can cover up all manner of other sartorial crimes for three or four months? I've been watching too much Trinny & Susannah, haven't I?

Can anyone name any shops that might be worth going to? - I have the same issue.

Northface is a brand that has excellent down jackets in a variety of styles. A little on the expensive side, but on the plus side, you can buy them online or maybe find a discount on ebay or something...

For sunglasses frames, I love Chanel, even for men. They have shapes that fit anyone's face, without being too, ahem, Nicole Ritchie. Might cost up to $250 though...

This winter, mistersloane will be wearing Schott, Armani and Gold and Wood, and recommends all of em - the jacket is fucking impregnable, and suave, although pea-coats have kinda been done to death over the past few years, I don't care, it was 20 quid in a charity shop. I think ski-wear is what people are wearing this year if you wanna be trendy.

For glasses I really like Polaroid lenses, they make the world look better than it really is, which is a wicked thing for glasses to do. Chanel looks great on black and asian kids but I'm too old to rock them now. And I don't have a trust find, so I can't wear Cartier ones.

Can I just say thank you? I'm getting the first two picks for my boyfriend for Christmas. He's been wearing his dad's peacoat from the early 60s for years, the pockets have holes, and it's pilling like crazy. Those EA glasses are hot, too--he's been wearing these sleazy aviators we found at a discount dollar store that are cool but probably will burn out his corneas. Super-cheap sunglasses fool your pupils into looking at the sun for too long, without actually protecting them.

Never heard of gold and wood...do we have these over here I wonder?

Yeah you should have Gold and Wood over there, REALLY posh opticians stock them I think, they are super, super expensive but as I wear glasses and had previously never bought a pair - having had prescription ones forever - I added up all the years I hadn't spent on them and splashed out. They make frames in ebony and antique mahogany and shit, it's like wearing a Ferrari.

I really can't recommend that Schott jacket enough, it's the first jacket that's ever kept me warm, puffa jackets included. There's alot to be said for natural fibres, and cos it's wool, it's waterproof too. Clever sheep.

I just can't bear another winter watching him walk around in the ratty peacoat, or his other nehru collared mod looking jacket that is really thin cotton wool blend. With no hat.

I have heard good things about Schott before, just never looked into it. Should suggest the peacoat for my brother from the parents as well...

love the versayce, too...one of the people who works at the salon where i get my hair done wears what might be gold and wood glasses...he literally has walter benjamin style hard metal frames with all of the wire detail, all done up very high end. not everyone can pull stuff like that off, but he kind of looks professorial. they call him "professor".

that sounds like exactly what i need!! thanks everyone for tips and such. i am looking into the north face range that have 'goose down' marked as one of their special features.. there are some on ebay.. i'm also thinking it might be cheaper to order from an american website given how crazy the exchange rate is.

Other option for seriously warm winter coats is a proper crombie. Not the most versatile of garments though, you often end up looking like either a crap gangster or a weekend goth. And if you get it properly wet it takes a fortnight to dry. TBH if I was going to the midwest for winter i would go for down parka+timberlands and have done with it.

On the subject of sunglasses, can I say how much I hate it when blokes with fat heads wear Oakleys? It looks like they have a thick bit of elastic squeezing thier head into a bean shape. It's highly unattractive.

I used to have two crombies, they were really great though yeah, absolutely hopeless if you went to the cinema or a packed pub / cafe' -you can hardly just fold them up beside you. Plus they smell manky when it rains.

whatever you do dan, don't buy it until you get to the states. clothes are cheaper there anyway, but with the exchange rate as it is you'll get something really good for half the price you'd pay here. i recommend spiewak, carhartt and north face parkas. make sure they're down-filled and with a thick fur trim on the hood - preferably real fur, if you have no objection to that kind of thing — because you'll need that hood. speaking as someone who spends a lot of time in quebec in the winter, you will not care about looking cool, you will care much more about your ears dropping off. also buy gloves. i repeat, buy several pairs of gloves and always keep them in your pocket. these are very, very important.

Get some Raybans or Rayban copies for shades, one of the very few trendy things I like at the moment.
Also, if you're going to get some big modern looking parka/anorak, then go for a black one, not something in half a dozen flouresent colours, like a Dutch exchange student.
