Maybe, but I can tell a complete lack of effort when I see it.

There's been a hell of a lot of effort put into it, I'd say. The amount of keyframing, lighting, skin masks and texturing, plus the stuff going on inside the squid, it woulda taken quite a good while to do, much longer than yr average video. I'm not defending it, it's boring, but time and effort into execution isn't where they fell down. But it's not as if the tune DOES anything, why should the video? Editing sucks though.

I wanna hear yr booty bass 'minimalism my ass' track zhao.

abstract? it's entirely figurative. there's nothing abstract about it. it's simple and distinctive. i think it works...
i meant trippy more than anything - abstracting from the sonics - not that it's non-representational.

it also takes a bit more of an aesthetic risk than the very "tasteful" videos you posted, which are simply generic. it's a dance music promo, no one's presenting it as a work of "art"

It's a great video! I love how the squid turns to have the motor/gyroscope thingie, and then the pan pots sticking out of it, it's this wierd propulsive graceful-but-awkward, organic-but-machinic alien-but-familiar thing... like dubstep

It would be quite jarring to have this video inserted into a normal MTV timeslot. 3 minutes of trippy squid between your average booty-ho/girl power/guitar band clips

Sorry, late to the party, but that squid video is GREAT. It reminds me of all the terrible dance CG from the mid 90s, e.g. FSOL with their dodgy tentacles.

Cute.

I picture Night dropping and the entire floor all doing the squid dance, arms waving rhythmically, kind of bending their knees and gently bobbing up and down... underwater dancehall for real.

PS to Blackdown n Dust, I fuckin love that Newhams track with Badness - Footsie's beats are wicked - and you can see other threads for my opinion which is far from straight down the line on the use of that word - but I had people telling me to take it off when I was playing your set.
Like I said, I love the tune - but like I said I did get told to turn it off.

I envisage a potential future where Badness gets sprayed by a drag queen when he comes out a session. I've known queens who've held up post offices in drag, strapped, do you really know how fucking mental some battymen are? Some of these queens are fucking sick in the head, and you really don't want to provoke it, they've also got AIDS and have nothing to lose. At some point it becomes about the fact that we're not here to take your abuse. My friends took it personally so all I can do is offer you up a facsimile of what they said when they heard what you were playing.

Good show though.

yeah so i wasnt entirely comfortable with playing it either, we talked about it beforehand and i'd planned to my own radio edit but didnt make the time. i wouldnt play it in a club like that either.

my personal take is i'm a bit numb to the use of that word - hearing it anymore times isnt going to turn me into a homophobe - but i guess that doesnt apply to everyone.
