As with many forms of fun, that use of money is escapism, to avoid having to look at one's life or be alone with oneself for even one second.
But yeah, security is one thing that moeny can buy. Some (a lot of) people just buy into that too much, and don't realise how much security they really need (way less than they think they do - when you earn more money, geenrally you just spend more of it on shit than before).
good point, i tend to overestimate the cushion of savings i need to be comfortable. then again, maybe i'm just cheap!
one funny aspect of being thirfty is how you can sometimes dwell on incredibly small and unimportant purchases. more than once i've found myself standing in front of the supermarket shelf trying to determine if it's a better deal to get the 12 oz can of beans for 1.49 or the 20 oz can for 2.29...as if it matters! ridiculous.
