and not feeling the jazzanova dub-cheese of Faulty DL either.

what tracks have you listened to? I thought imo he was one of the artist's who have kept me sane this year, stuck to the right path, his tunes are really lush & sexy.

give me this over nobody's listening.

Wot even Starkey "Miracles (Jamie Vexd Remix)." Surely not!!!? ;)

not sure if yer being sarkey (not starkey) or wot, but the original is a skeletal mystical desert mirage shimmering in the dry heat (meaning convincing and evocative), and this remix is, um... NOT convincing OR evocative. adding cheeky garage diva samples, extraneous snares, and arbitrary vulgar synth stabs does not a good "remix" make.

what it does make, like this item:

"In System Travel"

is a confused and ugly mess.

well to me it's cold compared to half the other throwaway bullshit that seems to appear in the "dubstep" rack. They should do away with that tag now..it's not dubstep is it. Just tear-out, I mean I was listening to skream on rinse before it got cut off the other night, and my goodness...AND Nearly every tune got a wheel?? why??? There was only like 1 or 2 tunes that were not tearout...poor, poor, poor.

nope. jamie vex'd starkey remix and scuba remix are two of the best things i've heard in the last year by quite some margin. :) (in system travel i feel a lot less strongly about tho).

i kinda get what you mean with planet mu, to me they have this sorta consolidated, chunky sound/aesthetic, and a certain hi-fidelity distortion/ruffness to all their stuff, not so much the reissues like terror danjah/remarc obviously cos thyre made elsewhere.
however im still into what they do for the most part, and that jamie vexd miracles is a really nice.
but yeah, somthing about the pluggins...

what's that new brackles tune with the pitched down dancehall vocals? "linga" I think it's called.

feeling that.

no, this is not the noodly aimless pseud-industrial wank i'm on about, terror danjah is sickness.

what lthe pseudo industrial music of
brackles
floating points
gemmy,
starkey
falty dl
rafertie
few nolder
jamie vex'd etc ?

i think you're labouring your point a bit there zhao

i could understand your description if you were criticising milanese or vexed or legion of two just about,
but if this is a description of the other things i've listed which are on that comp, you're pretty off the mark, it's fine if you have a prejudice about the label cos of what it has released or whatever but the actual music here on the comp doesn't stand up to your description.

I'm not going into this again anyway, as i fear we're moving into a situation where you've chosen to be unbudgable with a massive and weird generalisation again.

the description used only really makes me think of Venitian Snares, which was good & that, but I never really got  :(

edit rafferties tunes are pretty wass though, and that Gemmy - BT Tower is diabolical.

I reckon I agree with mms on this one - I'm far from an expert on IDM, but to my ears the Planet Mu output has become a lot less strictly IDM-ish has time has gone on. From putting together discogs for my mixes on the blog, I noticed that I'd been playing a lot of their releases lately without fully realising it.
Having a look at that tracklist - almost everyone here is keen on Brackles and Gemmy, so I don't need to hype them, expect to say that, in different ways, they both produce work with a lot of warmth and some very deep grooves. I wouldn't associate them with some idea of stiff, soulless, pseudo-intellectual material at all. Personally I'm not as keen on Faulty DL and Floating Points as some are, but then I'm at quite an early stage of investigating them. As for things like Starkey, Raffertie, Jamie Vex'd, well obv it's a corny thing to say, but to me a lot that stuff just rocks, y'know? Lots of strong beats and ravey sounds. Maybe that's not exactly going to sell it you Zhao, but again their output is very far from aimless noodling (JV also has that celestial, abstract-beauty mode he can go into, which I really appreciate).
Michael prob has at least half a point about the parasitism idea, in that a lot of the PM material uses established sounds and takes them in a more abstract and/or extreme direction. But again, as time goes on, it feels much less like a piss-taking parasitism, they're putting their own sincere spin on existing genres. (Although to be fair Wobble Horror by Raffertie is taking the piss, but I luvvit though. And 'no funk' is way off in that case, if it dropped in a club I'd dance like nuts to it).

Alex, what's so bad about BT Tower eh? Wordless sing-along time. ;)

they're almost all 'made elsewhere'

pretty much everyone they've signed recently made their name in dubstep or whatever, being played by those DJs and signed to other labels before planet mu. they're not a camp like they were anymore, that particular accusation just doesn't stand up at all

dunno man, just a bit predictable as a tune, as soon as the 1st bass note hits I know what the entirety of the tune will be
