they way i remember it italy lost to the us in their first game of the last world cup. its far too early to draw any conclusions on the back of one result. specially for me cos i couldn't even be fucked waking up to watch it at 4am.

The USA drew their game against Italy (the 2nd game) and lost both their others, to Ghana and the Czechs. I watched that Ghana game in the US - when it comes to whingeing about perceived refereeing injustices, the Yank commentators are right up there with the Brits.

Am in Capetown, you'll be pleased to know me and the Doc were maybe 15 foot from Thierry Henry during the France game and he got royally booed. The stadium is amazing. More soon, this net conection is fuckin awful.

Darned cockwombles.
France are going home soon anyways...

Haven't really sunk into the World Cup atmosphere yet - watched 20 mins of Argentina-Nigeria, and wished I'd watched more by the sound of it. Argentina were murdering them when I left it though. They're definitely the team I want to win it.

England-US - quality-wise it was fucking awful. I thought I was watching Sheffield United-Wimbledon* in an exotic pre-season friendly for a while there. Heskey did his job really well though - it's not stylish, it's not pretty, but it does allow us to draw against the United States.

(* the worst game I have ever been present at.)

Looking forward to seeing Australia crush the Germans and set up England-Germany mega-clash in the second round!

preference for the bbc is admirable but that build up to algeria-slovenia was criminal; basically laughing about how little they knew about the two teams and shearer admitting "not much is known about them". i'm sorry but the only team you can claim that about is north korea - bbc had rights to the african cup of nations with algeria in; slovenia are bloody european and england played them in a friendly only last year, they're both in england's group - it's your bloody job to tell us about them!!!

Ineffective public service right there. OT but I hope when these mad cuts start coming in that the BBC is right in the firing line, I want to see the proliferation of smug, cloistered arseholes on there receiving a healthy dose of public opprobrium. Hopefully Alan Hansen and Shearer would be included in that...Lazy cunts. Can't even spend 20 minutes looking over some stats or something beforehand. Poor.

It's not a great game, but that's fucking insulting. Even if Slovenia and Algeria are only of interest as future England opponents it's nowhere near good enough to just say - "Ah we'll beat these. Next." Both sides are well enough set up. How are England going to break them down? At the very least do that. What's really shit about the analysis of the England team is it's done in such a vacuum.

This is what happens when you a) employ people on the basis of how good they were at playing the game, not how much they know about it b) encourage everyone to collude n the myth that ours is a league full of unbeatable superstars c) are generally pigshit ignorant.

BBC's 'expert' panellists have spent years floating by on personal anecdotes - the idea they should have to research anything before offering some anodyne view...Shearer even thinks he can be a Premiership manager without putting in any spadework, so it's hardly a surprise.

shame this result cos algeria have edged it for me

agreed, generally had a little bit more going forward. battle of the dodgy keeper's on Friday night (also a shame as he'd look good up until then). i have two West Brom mates, what w the Koren goal and Algerie bringing on a Wolves, it's a moral victory in the pubs of Smethwick...
