i would say that quarter final line up would be lovely but oooh i don't know what's actually going to happen and as mentioned before, 6 out of 8 of those would-be quarter finalists are world cup winners.

a few more shocks will happen yet.

we're talking about games that have to be won here.

I'm not even sure I'd agree with that, he' just less high profile at Pompey, and lately injured quite a lot too.


What exactly is wrong with Joe Hart? He has experience of an international tournament (the under-21s, in which he excelled). He doesn't have much top-level experience, but then again he doesn't have any experience of letting England down.

This tournament is played in the present though.
To be honest, I don't think it really matters, I don't think there's that much to choose between them - as long as there are no more howlers.

Hodgson there w an almost philosophical/existential assessment of the malaise, the phenomenon, that is Domenech. unbelievable. as Roy H said, that languid air. man. i would love to see the French papers tmrw AM. (between this and the Lakers win, LA must be lively, too.)

as for my beloved Super Eagles, as i just tweeted, Kaita, act in haste, repent at leisure :rolleyes:

I think it is just the one person as well, so I presume they must be a student or something. Hopefully though they are writing their way into a full time football journalist position because it really is an amazing website. It's always worth reading before a match just to give the game some context and perspective - the Chile-Honduras game for example. ZM wrote a fan blog for the Guardian the other week so maybe they'll pick him up. Would make a nice change from the likes of Paul Hayward.

The Spain result has obviously been discussed in depth, so all I'll say is that I found it disappointing just because it might make Chile's chances of progression that bit harder and I think it's important that they progress because of how they play their football.

(It was me that recommended Zonal Marking by the way. Hopefully it's a kind of payback for all the useful info I've got out of this forum before.)

I spent quite a bit of the flight reading the BBC World Cup 'bible' - a staggering tome put together by a group of statistical legends.

It's essential for all commentators, pundits, presenters and reporters but sadly not available to buy. Its near 500 pages will tell you everything from the goal tally of Uruguay's Luis Suarez to the name of the Nigerian president! If you're interested, it's Goodluck Jonathan.

Is it really asking them too much to have a bit of a flick through this beforehand? (Of course, they should be doing even more than that but let's take it one step at a time.)

yes, tbh, it would have been a job for them to be more negative than they managed in the prior match, but they were a lot livelier today (albeit at times still treading water and not wanting to go forward or having any sense of urgency on occasion), but i'm made up for them, their first WC win ever, two goals, it clearly meant so much to the fans.
some commentators are perhaps not looking at the context that teams are operating in, wanting a bit of a moon-on-the-stick approach; i dunno.

loving the love on-thread for Chile.

finally, can i just say i'm looking forward to a cracking game of football tomorrow.

oh and then there's the Group C matches as well i suppose,
