Germany were phenomenal today - Argentina barely had a shot on target, and the front line I believed the strongest in the tournament was utterly nullified. I kind of want them to win now.
As for Suarez, after time to calm down I accept most players would have done what he did....but I think a penalty goal has to exist in a case where a player handles on the line. I'm sure in rugby when the penalty try was introduced, people were skeptical (I'd have to look into the history of this).
Disappointing performance from Spain, so far. They look like they just can't be bothered at all. The passing has been atrocious; so many have gone astray.
Villa looks absolutely useless at the moment. He seems to be stumbling, fumbling and slipping over constantly. Definitely not his night.
villa looks like he's being marked by 3 players in fairness. looks like paraguay have made the wise decision not to bother marking torres too tightly as well, because he has been shocking so far this tournament
still would be surprised if spain don't come through this. i'm not sure what jonathon pearce's "point" is about argentina and brazil with regard to spain.
jonathon pearce is really really grating. i don't want to hear his ruminations on the south african economy. if you've got nothing value to add then value silence.
ok now they are through i will say the reason i believe spain will beat germany
1. spain 1-0 germany, euro 2008. how far have germany REALLY come since then? have spain gone backwards?
2. spain have looked poor against teams who sit back and try and counter, which has basically been every team they have played against this world cup bar chile. germany have ONLY played sit back and counter after they have already gone ahead and seriously doubt their capacity or willingness to do this from 0-0.
3. further to this argentina were known to have a weak defence and england's defence played atriciously. against the stronger defences of serbia and ghana germany struggled to make a breakthrough.
4. spain have the most underrated defence in this tournament. their defensive record in the past 2-3 years is second to none. whether casillas has looked a little shaky or not. could you expect germany to make a breakthrough if spain take a lead? i could not.
I find it so frustrating watching football. The amount of cheating that goes on is obscene. Pretty much everyone dives, fakes injuries, appeals for corners/throw ins when they blatantly knocked the ball out, appeals for cards etc
It's irritating that people who are, supposedly, good enough at what they do to be paid vast sums of money, have to resort to cheating to succeed.
5. russia 2008 as equivalent to germany 2010 - russia tore apart the dutch favourites in 2008. the hype and expectation carried them into their semi-final against spain. read the intro here, spain were thought of being disappointing and grinding out results, even relying on penalties to beat italy, by the end they were vaunted as great.
What an amazing piece of entertainment all these quarter final matches have been...thrills spills chills and ills all over the joint. Feel shit for Ghana but I'd have done the same as Suarez. That mad penalty stuff this evening too, goals in off three posts...Thought Spain displayed a bit of brilliance but it wasn't a consistent performance. Torres has been seriously mince, wonder if they'll bring on that other guy starting in the next game. I doubt it.
Germany playing Argentina off the pitch earlier - they look so solid a team, playing together. Aye indeed the bookies must be rubbing their hands in glee. The favourite has changed every two seconds in this tournament.
i really like how germany are always looking to go foward instead of passing it in triangles through the midfield for half an hour before booting it aimlessly over the corssbar from 40 yards out like some other teams i could mention. or dribble it past 7 players like messi. always finding space, always passing to the man in space. its how i wanted england to play. quite straighfoward and high tempo.
