Cooking tips and wonderful flavour combinations

My housemate's got a great one for fish (which he catches himself). He puts olives, chorizo sausage and breadcrumbs in the food mixer and uses that to coat the fish with before frying. So rich and tasty, works well with Salmon or trout especially.

Darned cockwombles.
Easy farfalle - anchovies, green olives, lemon zest and juice, olive oil. Possibly sardines too, and pine nuts, raisins.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...

Many fruits work well alongside savoury flavours, meats, fish, cheeses and whatever. Raisins are not one of them (IMESHO). Raisins in savoury dishes just conjures up images of 'sophisticated' '70s curries, preferably served with a sprinkling of coconut. Or soggy coronation chicken sandwiches from the canteen.

Just no.

Ottolenghi says you're wrong, Tea,among others. Submit to the pwer of the raisin.

Just another dish that benefits from the holy raisin:

Hmmm. Not convinced.

Yesterday I made a wholemeal loaf with chopped dried dates, coarse-ground black pepper and lots of grated mature cheddar in it. Pretty damn good, although I say it myself. Would probably be even better with figs instead of dates, though.

Would've been even better with RAISINS!

They go well with feta, also with carrot.

And I'm assuming you're tactically ignoring chutneys...

Yeah, forget the dates and figs, and add the raisins.

You know it's the right thing to do.

Come on guys, let's not fall out over this...

Are raisins a common ingredient in chutneys? When I think of fruit in chutneys I think mainly of apples and mangoes. Actually I guess some English-style chutneys have raisins in them (or maybe sultanas/currants) but I prefer the spicy Indian ones myself.

I second Mr Tea on this one, raisins belong in Alpen. I excuse the odd one in a good pilaff/biryani but aside from that, they're the work of the devil.

MR TEA you deserve a pat on the back. im sorry i couldn't rush t your aid sooner but i am the cavalry. raisins in savory food are a fucking abonimation. if you ever serve me raisins in a curry i will throw it back in your face and never cross your threshold again.
i tell you what works really well though, bread and cheese. you dont even need tomatos or pickle or anything. just bread and cheese. try it one day. cheddars a good option but theres other cheeses that work well. experiment.
