Are you joking? It's the fucking history of black music. It starts with white blues fans booing Muddy Waters for using an electric guitar, continues through white men slagging off 80s dancehall for slackness (when it was actually too dangerous in JA to make outright political music) and reaches it's recent apothesis with pricks slagging off Atlanta rap in favour of the "golden age" and 4 elements.

that's the inverse of what i was saying. those are examples of nerdy white boys shunning innovations in black music. i was talking about examples where actually white nerds were the main audience for an innovative strand of black music.

If you wanted to go wild full on speculation you could talk about us lot being the last lot (end of the 70 early 80s maybe) to have grown up the shadow of the Cold War. A binary world.

the leering danger when you grew up was perceived to be state actors; namely the us or the soviet union starting a nuclear war.

whereas the big when i grew up with the idea that it was terrorists or gangs.

And now it's global warming as the existential threat.

Sorry misread you. Been counselling people all day and I am tired. Just having a net break while bracing myself for cooking dinner.

I'm talking about desires aspirations dreams loyalties values

in jamaica spending too much time in the states is a big no no. mavado's reputation has been forever tarred by getting signed by dj khaled and doing all those features for him and all that. he's never been forgiven.

This is one of the things which can come between desires and the conscience isn't it.

Do you stay loyal to your community and be a mouthpiece for them and articulate their experience or do you become this other thing and get rich.

I think Wiley is torn by that whereas obviously younger people not.

tryiing not to be homophobic is another one. that's seen as kowtowing to the outside world.

bob marley all pally with chris blackwell and becomes a global icon.

lee perry calls blackwell a vampire and ends up as some geriatric nutjob talking to himself in the middle of nowhere

this is a good example of the way capitalism erodes and disintegrates. the way capitalism is often pushing in what we would perceive to be a progressive direction. Erasing localism custom tradition belief.

there's an interview where elephant man's made some public promise to refrain from homophobia so he can tour internationally, but then there's been some rumour that he's had gay people in his swimming pool. so he's in this interview trying to reconcile not being homophobic with staunchly denying that he's had gay people round his house. he ends up saying "why would i have gay people in my swimming pool, its just been cleaned", which i don't think peter tatchall would approve of to be honest.
