Wow - no fucking way!I was just saying to a friend, get this: the wunderkind fashionblogger Helena St Tesseract (of Ezra Koenig's Neo Yokio) is not just based on Koenig's ex-gal Tavi Gevinson, herself a wunderkind fashionblogger, but is also played by Tavi. Tavi, we might recall, is a huge Young-Girl Theory (Tiqqun) fan who founded Rookie Mag at like 12, her best foray into autofiction the Infinity Diaries, which center on her and Koenig's relationship.
Go on then, as I've taken the piss I will endeavour to make amends or do penance or something and try and understand that utterly mystifying paragraph above. It's funnier if you've read the Tiqqun I swear
Tiqqun's Theory of a Young Girl is all about how the young girl exists/circulates as commodity. Gevinson and Helena both trade their fashion blogging for political activism. But they're still stuck in their own images, influencing a consumer base (of fellow young girls, who imitate their look & behaviors), and even as they're radicalized, the only thing that changes in practice is the content of their Instagram feed. Even Helena's revolutionary anti-capitalist anti-fashion becomes a global trend. There's no escaping the matrix of images, etc.Go on then, as I've taken the piss I will endeavour to make amends or do penance or something and try and understand that utterly mystifying paragraph above.
Start at the beginning - what is Tiqqun?
But what I don't understand is how it can be a revelation (that was the pay-off wasn't it?) that someone is played (as in acted by) a particular person. If you've seen the thing then you would know surely?
I mean if I watch something with a character A based on real life person X, then surely, if I know who X is I'll realise that X is playing A which is based on him/herself. And if I don't know who X is then I won't get the joke to start with.
I'm so confused.
"Trade their fashion blogging for political activism"- you mean they kinda lure people in by blogging fashion, but then they switch it up and suddenly WHAM they're laying politics on these unsuspecting fashion victims? But, the built-in problem is that this approach only works on the kind of people who are gonna follow the fashion bait to start with?Tiqqun's Theory of a Young Girl is all about how the young girl exists/circulates as commodity. As for actors, it's an anime series—so they're all voice actors, I suppose I ought to have specified.
