I guess the counter argument to the one rich made about marvel films preventing more interesting films being made is that making one marvel film presumably gives you the resources and clout to do any number of 'interesting' films afterwards

Yeah it's all about nipples so hard they could cut rock.

Seem to remember GRRM writes cringingly about women too.

Persistent feature of trash fiction, or also a feature of highbrows?
One thing with GRRM though, all the sex stuff in the tv show was ninety percent put in by them - he gets ribbed a bit unfairly for that I feel.

Yes true... but isn't this a bit kinda "I'm gonna go into the mainstream and subversively fuck it up from the inside. Just one more big pay cheque and then I'll be in a strong enough position to start."
I mean, both arguments are valid, it can go either way, but you see the danger is there.

who has made this career path a success then

who has made this career path a success then
Maybe Jon Favreau, who likely wouldn't have done Chef otherwise. Other potential examples: Joss Whedon maybe, I mean Ryan Coogler did Creed before Blank Panther but they both likely bolstered him greatly. Turns out Coogler is doing a historical drama about Fred Hampton, who'll be played by Daniel Kaluuya.

Woops: Who has made this career path a success then?
In other words who has used mainstream success to fund more underground pursuits?
One that springs to mind is that Alain Robbe-Grillet whom I mention cos he specifically said that the money he made working as a mathematician or engineer or whatever meant that he felt no pressure whatsoever to be commercially successful in his writing and allowed him to experiment as much as he wanted.
Another might be Pierre Clementi who I assume used success in thing like Belle du Jour to fund weird stuff like X....
I dunno, I think there are quite a few who did something like this to a greater or lesser extent, it's always kinda debatable I suppose.

so no notables or non-maybes then? there's steven soderbergh i spose? but the tide runs almost always the other way, one minute you're making a wicked gore film on a shoestring, next you're doing Lord of the Rings. just saying, not saying those examples don't count. robbe-grillet definitely doesn't count though. i mean who has genuinely made millions in hollywood and spent it on doing interesting films that will make no money

theres always space for interesting underground pursuits though. the question is whether any of these directors have leveraged their hedge in major studios to get interesting projects produced in the same space as marvel movies.

John cassavetes is an example of someone taking money from the system and doing his own thing. And some of his films like chinese bookie and woman under influence are really good.

Like I say I picked Robbe-Grillet because he is one of the few who specifically said that he used his money-making skills to fund his artistic pursuits.
There ARD definitely notables though - I was just in a rush to the shops before the footie and I suggested two, it's not an exhaustive list.
A bigger example; I read Mario Puzo's autobiography and in that there is a bit where he gets annoyed cos Coppola says he is making The Godfather purely cos he knows it will be a success and make him lots of money which he can use to fund other projects... and Puzo is careful to stress that the reason he's annoyed is cos Coppola has figured out that idea so young, he himself wishes he had thought of it and written The Godfather earlier in his career instead of pissing around with stuff that was more interesting to him but no-one else.
