apparently Villalobos dropped 'Left Leg Out' on Saturday. my friend and I honestly called this the moment we heard the record, it's getting pretty easy to spot "Ricardo's dubstep picks". wish I was there.

a wonderful wooden reason
Left Leg Out absolutely rules. I love that on-the-one morse code rave blip pattern.

i'm sure dubstep and minimal will make fine friends both hermetically sealed scenes with interest from the media, similar producer led outlook on life similar problems with moving beyond current stereotypical styles.

Ned

Ruby Tuesday
New Tectonic Plates compilation sounding pretty good. For me, highlight = Skream - 'Bahl Fwd', lowlight = Armour - 'Iron Man'

I just dont know
problems with moving beyond current stereotypical styles

i dont think this is really true, i think some of the most visible players definately are, but as far as i can see, others dotted around the scene / on the fringes are sparking off in new directions every week

ok, off the top of my head (and therefore obviously not all-encompassing)...

mala
pinch (if pages is any indication of where he's going)
geiom
the bug / ladybug
vex'd
matty g
benga/walsh
drop the lime
all of the mg77 lot (i know you might say its grime or sublow but to me it can easily be called dubstep)
gravious
shackleton
ramadanman

none of the above fit into what one would call the stereotype... theyre certainly not struggling to escape creative fetters

lol i have little more to tell im afraid! its on his digital danger mix (which is on barefiles), coming in at around 1hr10:40

its very very minimal, dark, some really interesting rhythmic work with amelodic textures, a lot of emphasis on fx and atmosphere

only stays in the mix unnacompanied for a short time though

check it out, let me know your thoughts, im always interested by them

i quite agree but i'm getting tired of hearing pretty tedious half step chuggers week in and out, it's about ten piles of poo to every five good to one amazing at the mo, which is ok but not great, it's about the same with minimal bits too.
agree with timeblind, looking fwd to his next bits.

i CAN'T stop listening to shackleton, play the singles all the time and just downloaded the 70-minute dubsta mix from the skull disco website, wicked. it's like he's already moved beyond dubstep, love the muslimgauze-esque vibe.

I just dont know
i did forget him didnt i, thats a big ommission too! im sure there are others

i also think what some of the fwd-associated grime producers are doing is incredible... ie dump valve of late, plasticman etc

i agree about ratios (roughly), but i guess what i feel is that when there is still such a large number of excellent tunes coming through, which are pushing the vanguard as far as they are (imo), im not gonna complain

im gonna be very selective as to which djs i see, thats for sure

and the initial point was about difficulty in making advances with the sound to be fair, not quality control

ish, its still dubsteppy, he treats the samples and sources he uses respectfully, he learn something from them rather than just using them, which sets him apart in one respect.

I just dont know
further names breaking moulds, very obvious ones too...

blackdown
burial
bass clef

nice bit of alliteration also

Grievous Angel

Beast of Burden
Komonazmuk doing good stuff, narcossist coming along nicely, blackdown still very good (esp Lata).

benga is an absolute fucking don, there is so much more to come from him.

Hijak - sweet jesus, some of his tunes are massive, slomo junglist mayhem.

Caspa - fabulous dayglo rave business, I love it, got some dubz from him that will absolutely and totally blow away a dancefloor.

I do NOT agree about the ratios, there still aren't that many bad dubstep records coming out AFAICT. There are some ropey CDRs out there but they haven't been released. Anyone want to name names?
