Yeh, but they're hardly unique in that respect

I've just stumbled on oddbins first dedicated beer shop.

In Blackheath of all places, grabbed a few kernels for that totally tropical taste

My brother had a pint of Beavertown Gamma Ray yesterday whilst I opted for the Wild Beer Bibble. Despite being a 'Session IPA' I thought the latter was the better drop - good malt backbone for a 4.2.

I had an Oud Bruin last weekend, such a trip down memory lane. My aunt worked for a brewery till retirement and this kind of beer was a staple at family reunions. If you like acidic beers (it's a strong if, I know) really something to try.

Oud Bruin sour, are you sure? AFAIR the one called that that I tried in Holland was mellow and sweet, like an old trad English brown ale or dark mild.

Edit: hmm, that fount of all wisdom Wikipedia says "[h]istorical examples tended to be more sour and acidic than modern commercial products", so maybe the one I had was a bastardized modern version and not the real deal.

Been drinking wine. Its not as good as beer but it does come in a better bottle and feels better to hold

Are you drinking straight from the bottle?

I've been struggling to drink beer a bit, I had an insight on all my recent trips that I need to give up alcohol again.

Having said that, I had 6 yesterday, 3 gross brown adnams ales and 3 ever horribler session ipas that were very fruity and Fizzy.

Inshallah gonna get some whisky today for tomorrow.

need red wine to warm the bones. Bought three bottles of Portuguese wine, no idea what they’re like, a Christmas experiment.

Did some of your folks come from Portugal way back? Or have I made that up?

Got mildly wankered walking round Oxford yesterday, loads of beer then seven or eight brandies when I got home to keep it topped up. They have proper fucked up so many of the pubs, ripped out beautiful ancient cosy interiors to make them into horrible sheds. I sound like an old man but it really shouldn't be allowed. Star was still just about ok though I guess, went there to drown my sorrows after Liza got all the best records out of Truck Store and I found fuck all. Anyway for me it's beer in a pub and wine at home, did order a glass of wine in a pub the other day and it was eight fucking quid.

That's sad to hear. If pubs are closing down because of rising costs or punters having no money, that's one thing, but when they mutilate themselves then it's just a gratuitous tragedy. Which ones in particular have changed for the worse? There were still plenty of decent ones when I was living there in 2016.

Last time I was in Oxford I met up with Matt (you know him) and he suggested we meet in Brew Dog, I walked in there and walked straight out, bumped into Matt and told him Brew Dog was hideous and I couldn't drink there but he said that everywhere nearby had been fucked up. And so we had one in there and then went to a couple of places on, I dunno, Marston Lane or whatever it's called, The Oxford Blue was still ok but every other place we went in round Cowley Road was fucked. Then again Matt claimed The Star had been vandalised too but yesterday I asked the guy in the record shop what it was like and he told me that although it had changed hands a couple of years back and they had changed it a little, it was tastefully and lightly done and I'd agree.

But on St Clements we went in the one opposite the Angel and Greyhound (which is ok and has by default risen about 20 places in the good pubs list of Oxford) and I almost cried. The interior was a brutal act of cultural vandalism.

The sad thing is it probably does increase business for them, because enough people don't really give a shit about the environment they're in as long as they've got something to drink.

This place, how old is it?

oldblackhorse.jpeg

How can it be that someone can buy something like this and then just wipe out centuries of history? It should be lovely and cosy inside with a snug and a saloon bar and all that, not a fucking linoleum floor and shitty black plastic tables. Cunts.

I did look in the window of The Bear and that looked ok still at least thank fuck.

It's the same everywhere and has been for years isn't it? catering to students and tourists. Every time I've been back to Newcastle over the last 10 years I recognise it less and less. And here in Seville all the old, grotty but charming bars in the centre are disappearing to be replaced by chains, so I mostly just stay in the barrio now and hardly ever go into town.
