He said that being gay wasn't enough

I've mentioned my mate who makes films on here before and he's said the same thing. He was competing for funding with a bunch of other people and said he was essentially forced to emphasise his sexuality as much as possible in order to be in with a chance of getting it.

Bit of a tangent, but does anyone remember that period of about five minutes a few years ago when 'woke' was positively adopted by right-wing conspiranauts as a synonym for 'enlightened'? (About the usual suspects - aliens, communism, vaccines, da Jooz, etc.)

Red Scare, I'm putting it very provocatively, is at least as influential as jungle I reckon (and is also an innovative form), and that's the whole animus comes from I think, the audience's drive the listen, the woke backlash

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of whether they're getting money from Peter Thiel?

Fwiw one of the sources on that, that little KantBot freak, said something about podcasters getting $10k checks. In that godawful Theil biography The Contrarian, there's a mention or two of Theil handing someone a $10k check for a lunch meeting. Like, effectively it's a bribe but he just presents it as "I'd like for you to come work with me, but I want you to have this regardless of what you want to do." It seems to me like he just throws that kind of money around.

He definitely bankrolls those infamous lower east side parties along with some midlevel BlackRock suit who owns most of the properties they're hosted at. But I think it's less of a hand in glove thing than people like to panic about. All these people are pushing 30, they've failed at having careers in media and they've burned a lot of bridges, I'm sure they're aware that eventually the podcast money will dry up and are happy to take a handout from anyone who doesn't care about their reputation.

But something like that is pennies compared to that shit about Steven Crowder turning down a 50mil 3-year contract because he thought the figure was "insulting." That's the kind of money that can be made being a right wing stooge in independent media, that's Koch money. By comparison "$10k checks" should tell you how much you should care about red scare.

Patreon says they're getting 44,000 quid a month from podcast subscribers (11,000 of them). those girls are making some serious, serious paper. 264,000 quid a year each I guess. the most anyone has ever made from social commentary? Maybe not, but it's still a lot.

Isn't social commentary broadly what a lot of talking heads and opinion type hosts do on telly? Many of them can put a zero on the end of that and some can put two.

I mean two zeroes there obviously, I'm not saying they make 2,640,002

Of course it depends how you define it, but I reckon (he says without ever having heard it) that they are doing a more niche, and presumably more subtle, with less broad strokes for a more specialized audience, version of loads of shouty tv and radio... and even podcast come to think of it guys.

This one's actually quite good, I think. The Exeter Chiefs ruggery-buggery team were getting flack for the old cultural appropriation due to their generic 'American Indian' branding, so they replaced that chief with a more appropriate Iron Age looking dude last year:

Top Tip: if you find yourself drifting off while reading or watching Diversity, Equality & Inclusion material mandated by your employer, try adding interest by pretending that each instance of 'DEI' instead refers to Meshuggah's debut album, Destroy, Erase, Improve.
