He says once you get into high culture that purity comes back, it's just conventional culture that corrupts, but yeah, he definitely doesn't fit into that first category himself. That wasn't what bothered me about the comment though.
I suppose that if he's saying he likes high-brow and low but not middle then that's not that unreasonable. But I agree it's put quite patronizingly.

Notes Towards an African Orestes. An odd, somewhat patronising film. Pasolini's filmed 'notes' for a project in Africa that never came to fruition. It has its moments, but when he puts his ideas to a bunch of African students they knock him back a bit and that perhaps had something to do with his ultimately abandoning the film.

There's a jazz performance in the middle that's fucking appalling.
