before "prompt engineering" there was "google fu"
and before that there even used to be a time where I could download any media requested, legal or not, fuck copyright, etc.,
but more importantly, there are carefully crafted "ebay alerts" that can secure me my holy grails
[ bonus interlude ]
here's my hand crafted ebay search term for hardware synths that will ignore manuals, knobs, badges, tee shirts, sample packs, and all the other shit you don't need to encounter in the quest for real hardware synthesis gear:
(synth, synthesizer) -cd -dvd -lp -7 -12 -samples -library -dvdrom -ep -shirt -loops -cable -single -reason -receiver -atv -saphire -rubies -memory -sonik -utv -winch -ata -mens -futaba -leather -jacket -minimal -ring -softball -volleyball
but sometimes I will create an "alert me!" ebay search and it will lay dormant for a decade
and this tune that I added to my discogs want list and my carefully crafted ebay alerts about ten years ago suddenly popped up last week
Yard Boy Ten - Play Wit' Fire ( Dancehall Mix )
although you try
and try so hard,
failure is your just reward,
there is a lesson you must learn,
play with fire
you must get burn
burn
burn ...
and for some reason that I can't fathom I was the only bidder and I "won" the 12" at a bargain price, and I've placed it on my turntable tonight and within seconds i'm like...
hang on...
the beat is sub RZA ghostdog
and it's the vocals that hold it together
but I...
I..
I know that tune...
and I'm transported back to my hash dealing days when
I was obsessed with 1991 era "Hardcore Ragga" - Gussie Clarke, Music Works studio, 2-friends productions, those greensleeves 12 inches where they switched from the red, gold, and green labels to the turquoise labels....
and
this is actually my tune of the day
Home T, Cocoa Tea, Cutty Ranks - The Going Is Rough
although you try
and try so hard,
failure is your just reward,
there is a lesson you must learn,
play with fire
you must get burn
it's shame "prince quick" died in 2021 from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ( I had to look this up ), but for his "Yard Boy Ten" one a way alias 12 he just spliced the "going is rough" acapella over a beat. [*] ( actually when I first crafted my ebay search for this tune this would have been called a "mashup", I'm being way too harsh! and it's a tune that I coveted, and obviously I paid for it, even though I was the only bidder, but on some sort of drunken reflection I've decided that the Greensleeves 12 inch original rules, etc., )
but still I'm divided, both versions have their time & place, etc., and I'm happy to play one after the other, on loop, for infinity
[*] tbh, my most plays on "my" soundcloud was an ( she is married to the ugliest man in hip-hop mogulism, her first name begins with B? ) acapella over a Jamaican beat that i didn't produce, so... I love the "Yard Boy Ten" tune, but maybe I love the "going is rough tune" as well....maybe a bit more... conflicted...loop, for infinity
