Why do they feverishly push clearly tenuous stories? Because the overt act of irrational believing makes for a stronger signal of in-group membership than restricting oneself to rational and evidenced assertions. This is how cults eventually revolve around irrational beliefs; it's a privilege to see the intensification of this incipient process from my disinterested observatory.

Note that for the disinterested observer, if not caught within the cult dynamic, the good arguments in favour of the cult's partisan interests are swiftly swamped, causing some estrangement in the other direction. This can also be observed in this thread.
