Bland on the surface maybe, but in the context it's worrying.

Again, not particularly. You just have this warped view of Starmer and Labour based on Hitchens' oddball paranoia where everyone's a secret Eurocommunist. Anything will look sinister when you're starting from that sort of vague, conspiratorial viewpoint.

No, it's being said in the context of actually committing vast amounts of money and, possibly in the future, troops.

i think a lot of people who move away from england invest in the idea of english decline, that its gone to the dogs, and aint what it used to be. that way they can justify their decision to exile themselves from the people they love and the place that made them what they are.

even though their dear old mum is desperate to see them again. thagts why they read all these negative news stories to desperately bolster the notion they are so invested in.

There's some truth in this, but let's not make this about me. Can't we just all unite in our hatred of Starmer?

The same shit basically ever leader's done for decades. It's sinister if you're talking the military-industrial complex in general, but not if it's Starmer in particular saying it that's the issue.

Other than Farage, I can't really see any potential or former leader doing much different. They're all gonna be pro-NATO, pro-Ukraine.

We saw that with a bunch of the expats voting Brexit. Seems fairly common for people to back some hardliner from afar too, see: German Turks' support for Erdogan.

Yes, I agree with that, nothing I said contradicts it. But this is the Keir Starmer thread though.

And I did say:
Maybe 'sinister' was a poor choice of word, he probably thinks he's doing the right thing, I dont think he's evil, but that doesn't make it any less annoying and stupid.

You've talked about Starmer like this before though. You seem to feel he's something drastically different to and much more menacing than his predecessors.

I don't get it either, seems like all those headbangers on twitter claiming that he's destroyed democracy and needs to be removed immediately by King Charles or revolution whichever hurts more. To me he's a fairly incompetent and slightly smarmy ex-lawyer who is proving somewhat disappointing to absolutely everyone but he's about as sinister as a wet towel - and compared to Truss, Johnson etc he's actually relatively honest and skilled. He's maybe a bad politician but most of his last few predecessors were at such a low level they couldn't even be counted as that.

I don't think he's drastically different, but he's more ideological than say Johnson or Cameron, therefore potentially more dangerous. The fact he's essentially a lawyer as well rings alarm bells.

Yeah, one of my younger brothers was telling me a bunch of his mates all hate him too. It's bizarre to see such extreme reactions to such a dull, inoffensive figure. I wonder whether it's partly down to people struggling to process a bland managerial type after so much chaos and sensationalism. He can't be taken at face value, he must be hiding something.
