    BBC Sound of 2006 poll

MIA got a look in and no-one was interested. Grime got a look in, but it didn't have anything to sell at that point. Jamie Cullum and Katie Mellua and K T Tunstall get a look in and they sell a lot. Tons of filter-house records based around eighties samples hit the charts and they're not on...

    BBC Sound of 2006 poll

"Why is it so easy to break indie band after indie band at the expense of all other genres?" Because people like indie bands.

    Gutbucket Disco Mix

Go to my weblog and you can get a quick and messy mix I made to give to my friends over xmas. Maybe different to typical Dissensian fare but fun none the less. Death Jam Mix 02 - Gutbucket Disco Mick Jagger - Invocation of my Demon Brother Scorpions - Coast to Coast Aphrodite's Child - Funky...

Can UK Hip Hop/Grime Blow Up In The States?

“People don't have a problem with conscious rap; they have a problem with conscious beats. If you make some ignorant beats, you can say all the smart shit you want.” – Chris Rock

    this seems wrong to me

"British Sea Power bassist Hamilton was given a black eye when he became involved in a fracas with Krautrock legends Faust. The incident happened when the two played alongside each other at the Hove Old Market in Brighton earlier this month. Apparently, Faust frontman Jean-Herve Peron became...

    Most avant garde chart hits?

Wow! I never knew Human Resource "Dominator" charted! Number 36 in September 1991 and Number 18 in December 91 (as the "Complete Dominator".) Laurie Anderson "O Superman" only reached number two. It was kept from number one by The Police I think.

    Most avant garde chart hits?

Good call on the always under-rated David Essex. Mr Oizo - Flat Beat.

Do any internationally known musicians come here?

Yeah, that Beat Connection remix sounds interesting to say the least!

    John Fowles

The Collector is great and I recommend it to everyone. A lot easier and shorter than his other stuff and very tense and gripping narratively. Also, check this great article. Remember him this way! http://www.lrb.co.uk/v26/n09/sans01_.html

Moments you think you're losing your mind.

I used to work in a garage and sold lots of porn mags to truck drivers. They always went for Razzle and Fiesta which shows limited horizons I think.

    White Phosphorous

There isn't a difference between chemical weapons and white phosphorus, here's an extract from a CIA report on Saddam's weapons that classes white phsphorus as one: "Once committed, Iraq spent large amounts of money and resources on its CW program (see Figure 1). The outbreak of war with Iran in...

    The Politics of Music Journalism

I don't know anything about the actual politics of music journalism though!

    The Politics of Music Journalism

"And in my opinion the least interesting, least exciting Journalists are the ones who disdain involvement under a pretence of objectivity" - these are also, I think, the ones who are least objective and most likely to be swayed by other things (what they think they should say.) 'Reliable' old...

    A lifetime spent on Music

I've probably spent about the national average already but luckily I'm going to make up for it by grabbing everything free from the internet from now on. (Not really.)

    this seems wrong to me

The one time I saw British Sea Power the sound guy tried to punch one of them, which made me like them. They were actually better than the last time I saw Faust which was dismal 'avant' stuff soundtracking Nosferatu. It couldn't have been more cliched if they set out to parody boring, po-faced...

    The Wire's Covers Thing

I think the Wire's regular leaning on these best of lists is an admittance that it doesn't know where it's going anymore. That and those editorials where Chris Bohn has a comedy encounter w/Biba Kopf - talk about knowing that yr talking to a closed circle. I'd have liked to hear Woebot on The...
