i saw him play in glasgow last week and it really was incredible. no guitar, Jandek played 12 meditative piano pieces from a suite called "The Cell". he was accompanied by bowed double bass drone and some excellent percussion. i've never liked any of the recorded stuff i've heard from him.

    what makes a nightclub good?

i feel quite lucky to live in glasgow, there some pretty great clubs here actually including the best one i've ever been to - The Sub Club.

    Michael Haneke

calling someone an intellectual is derogatory now? sheesh. i'm pretty sure he approaches his films from an intellectual angle almost every time.

    David Mitchell

Well said Jenks, the novel now doesn't have to be any particular way or toe any particular stylistic line. BS Johnson seems no more or less relevent to me now than Henry James, to use your examples. I read novels of any and all kind. Saying the novel is fucked is like saying music is fucked...

    David Mitchell

"ghostwritten" is probably his best book still. I think "Cloud Atlas" is wildly overrated even though i do think Mitchell is a very good writer. I didn't think the threads connecting the stories were strong enough and i just felt that i'd read this whole metafiction thing before. I know we know...

Talk Talk Bohren und der Club of Gore The Necks i absolutely disagree with Primal scream who are fairly messy at times and (probably) intentionally so. in fact i disagree with just about all of puretokyo's suggestions.

    cremaster

i don't have a problem with it; it's primarily an art work, not a film. It's not like everyone's out there going "why can't damien hirst make sharks in tanks available for everyone, i live in the provinces and can't see it". The guggenhein section of "cremaster3" (a.k.a. "The Order" is...

    Michael Haneke

"Code Unknown" is his Masterpiece IMO followed by "Funny Games" - one of the only true intellectuals working in film now.

    Michel Houellebecq

His first book "Whatever/The Extension of the battlefield" is his best; clear concise and funny - and they get slighty worse as they go on. His most recent book "Lanzarote" is utterly pointless but quite diverting nonetheless. His style is transparent but as a reader I swither between thinking...
