My suspicion is he never forgot it.

very likely the case (y)

he also remembered all the games he ever played. One example: he played a simultaneous (somewhere sometime) and years later was introduced to someone (by someone or other), and he said (something like) haven't I met you before and the guy said yes, I played you in a simul (wherever whenever) and Fischer said ah yes, I'll tell you what you did wrong.

i would love to play more chess but it's finding a partner that's the problem.

ai opponents don't really cut the mustard. they take their goes so quickly you don't have the delight of time considering what they may do.
Do you not have any chess clubs in your vicinity? I’ve picked up some great games in the public libraries, as well as public urban parks.
I do know what you mean though if you have time conflicts with that type of Derive.

I've been reading a book about the history of chess. Montaigne is quoted:

"I hate and avoid [chess], because it is not play enough, that it is too grave and serious a diversion, and I am ashamed to lay out as much thought and study upon it as would serve to much better uses."

Sounds like something someone would say after discovering they were rubbish at chess.

The intro to the book talks about Duchamp becoming obsessed with chess and retiring from art to become a chessplayer. The way the book represents it seems to be a little bit bollocks but still an interesting thing WOT i didn't know

Any man that could sign and then hang a fucking urinal on a museum wall can clearly do whatever the fuck he wants

I'm getting very very slowly better just by playing more, you start to notice things that have fucked you up before, etc. Reading a smallllll amount of theory/strategic guidance helps too. I am clearly properly hooked cos if I play one game I end up playing about 10 and it's interfering with my work.

Whatever happens, I must DESTROY my Turkish barber next time I go in there.

it’s a funny rush, gradations of learning, surprising yourself, “men are born for games, nothing more” going full Judge Holden after fifty games in a row

the player coach gives you a daily option on chessmainlinedstr8intovein.com, astute options too

It’s a cliche but playing people better than you is key to improving.
I never was able to get much from the theory books.
I have been helped by replaying games. Just the way my brain works I think. I can stop any, or every move W or B and try to decipher the logic.

When you play bots you can get hints from the computer or even go straight up cheat mode and see every best move it recommends.

Obviously this is how people must cheat online.

It's a good learning tool though.

I imagine today's top players are all well schooled on computer moves. Don't think anyone can beat the computers now, they're just too good.

Stockfish is the strongest engine and it's free to download.
Use that on your phone while playing and you'll beat anyone who's not doing the same thing.
Well done! 😐
One warning: if you do that on chess.com their cheat detection system may pick it up and ban you.

I would think so.
I’ve heard of fighters (boxers/mma) train with those VR goggles that mimic their opponents
Style.
I’ve never played in tournaments. I think that’s why there are so many ‘theory’ type books. For the tournament player. It gets very much into recognition of all the named stratagems. Except for playing with my kid, almost every game I’ve played since the’00’s
Have been against inmates who have a very park player/hustler style. They try to manufacture momentum & tempo to throw you off. So, I play far more tactical than strategy (beyond the early development moves).
I used to bartend in this place that was a hangout for poker players. The Texas hold ‘em that was/is(?) popular on the pro circuit.
It turns out even card games like that share a certain regiment (can’t think of the proper term) & one of the big players back then who played those million dollar pot games said something like: “if I know, or even suspect a player is under the influence (drunk) I’m out!”
They are too erratic. It’s that choreographed.
That’s pro poker. It has to be that x1000 in high level chess.
There’s an old saying in surfing: the best surfer is the one having the most fun.
Easier said than done but when you love an activity, I think it’s pretty true.
