When I first moved to London ten years back I remember picking up on how loudly people would speak in public, on their phone on a bus, to their kids on the street. The most obvious explanation would be big city anonymity, you don’t care who’s around because they likely don’t know you. The other sad thing was that I grew up in a city where people couldn’t trust each other, so conversations stay at low volume in public. Then my other theory is the english are generally entitled, self-aggrandising, inconsiderate wankers who need to impose and take up space and be seen and heard at all times because they’re always terrified that maybe they don’t actually matter
