no, he's excellent at politics

he's very bad at governing
Ok to take one example...that whole "suburban women, just like me ok?" thing. How is that good politics ? How is that really crass and smartarse way of talking to people outside your base going to achieve your purported aim of getting more people to 'like you'?

Equally how is making yourself look like a fucking retard on live tv by suggesting that people inject bleach good politics?

not to his supporters, no
Sure, but if he loses, as seems likely, he'll need to appeal to people who aren't already his supporters in order to win again. Or any putative Trump 2.0 will need to. And time - and demographic change - are not on his/their side.

unforced errors
every politician commits unforced errors, just like every tennis player does. it goes with the territory.

he has the singular ability/lack of conscience to pretend those errors aren't errors/don't exist/etc

I mean dude there's a mountain of evidence to suggest that he's crazy like a fox

remember when he literally said "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters"

which mirrors the infamous Edwin Edwards (another great American huckster politician) "The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy" quote

I don't think you can say someone who doesn't know how to govern is excellent at politics. It's a huge deficiency.

that's true, it depends what is meant by "politics"

we're talking about being good at winning elections tho

the claim was that "Trump but better at politics" would unbeatable in elections, not that he would govern well

children and the elderly are often disarmingly honest, either unaware of or unconcerned with saying what's considered appropriate or polite. trump is wily, but also like a child/old person.

if you can't win elections you don't get to govern in the first place

LBJ for example, was the acknowledged master of getting legislation passed and running the Senate

but he very likely never would have been President if JFK hadn't been assassinated

I think a large part of his life must be spent having no clue what the people around him are talking about. Apparently he never reads official briefings, has no interest in global politics, has never read a book etc etc.

So he must go to these meetings, like at the UN or davos or wherever, and have not the faintest idea about what people are going on about.

To be able to do that and not care, not let it knock your confidence at all, is unhinged

Trump increased support in every demographic except white men relative to 2016. If the dems cant figure out a way to produce likeable candidates that also have establishment support the GOP is fine.

yeah, it's not that he's clueless...he just doesn't care. stories about how there was never any strategic plan at the trump organization, he's a total day trader who deals with what's in front off him that day.

I never said he wasn't unhinged to some degree

tho again I think it's an open question as to what degree he's actually unhinged, simply doesn't care, and/or is crazy like a fox

like Leo said he's a day trader, a cynical hustler whose only real belief is in his own (and his family/cronies) enrichment

that's in sharp contrast to Palin and the kind of movement conservatives she appealed to. I'm less clear on the level of cynicism in his overall base.

but he's obviously excellent at inflaming popular passion, appeals to pathos, etc, i.e. populism
