"Depends on a lot of things, but the 130% of the poverty line is a monthly salary of about $1500. A monthly grocery budget is probably about $100. Rent will be between $500-1000 if you have a spot to yourself, but many people under the poverty line live in big families, splitting up rent so it's only a few hundred a month."

put this in a frame and hang it on the wall

Attorney for Trump campaign in PA lawsuit files motion to withdraw: "the client has used the lawyer's services to perpetrate a crime. snd the client insists upon taking action that the lawyer considers repugnant"
Looks as though rats have finally realised the ship is holed below the waterline and well and truly sinking.

Maybe you dont intend it this way but that comes off like youre saying they wouldnt be angry if no one told them they should be. I don't believe that
or if they didn't tell themselves they should be. This is a slightly more interesting conversation to me. The other argument is inane and utterly untethered from reality.

Chad Wolf was nominated to lead the DHS but he called on Trump to condemn the protesters and that's been rescinded... so petty.

I know I was cracking up listening to the news coverage. "With his foot up! On the desk! This... this sacred space... desecrated! Representative Wyler, can you even... how do you process this? Are you in shock?"
every time they say democracy is sacred or the senate is a temple it's cringe

I lived for about three years below or hovering around national poverty line in the most expensive city in the country. I split a bed with a friend (no romantic involvement). I ate off $3 a day, rolling flour and water into doughs for bread, cooking with lots of potatoes, using super cheap veggies like frozen corn and peas and carrots. My monthly expenses were about $900, so I still tucked a few hundred into savings each month. Yes, I was still on my parents health insurance, and I was young which prevented real health crises, etc etc. Not at all trying to paint myself as "man, I've had it hard, I know what poverty is." It was three years, I was 21, who gives a shit. Just saying that I'm not pulling numbers out of my ass.

I mean, obviously everyone will laugh at you for saying this but also, it doesn't matter does it. You were ok with being poor-ish albeit with food parcels from mum and health insurance, no kids, no pressing debts or addictions, some people aren't.

And the not ok-ness of other people is, in my opinion, something to take seriously and probably not something to be explained away as a consequence of 'the stories they tell themselves.'

I don't disagree remotely; the opposite. I'm trying to take the problem seriously. I feel like in this thread I've said a few times that there are real problems, that people aren't OK. I just don't think the simplistic narrative of, "oh the peasants are starving to death in America, no wonder they have grievances" helps anybody. And I think "oh it's just a story" is a pretty unfair reduction of my/Stan's argument, which myself and Constant Escape have both unpacked/clarified above.

start a new thread, this one's about the election.

Elaine Chao, secretary of transportation (and Ms. Mitch McConnell) just resigned.
