It's called vocal fry. A lot of American women do it, particularly in California, but the first person I heard doing it was Marilyn Manson.

Isn't this the queen of the brooklyn cultural mafia? She's unbelievably dull and dislikeable.

i really like the thing she does where she more or less refuses to play the 'have an opinion on this' game. makes for a terrible interview but it really undercuts the podcast format that we are all consuming hurtling into without much commentary. all these slick people with their ideas to sell. the psycho killer interview tries to get her to go into that mode and she avoids it

I kind of thought the idea of a "cultural mafia" was that there are people have a lot of influence and connections and have their fingers in all sorts of pies.
