@suspended doxxed a tyrannical lowest common denominator tyrant who only ever wants tunes to sing to, lamentable! no conception of music as a sonic universe unto itself.

There's a sort of cynicism towards Mozart in modern culture. Perhaps not in popular culture, where Mozart for Babies and Lacrimosa are the soundtracks to many a suburban home; but amongst supposed music lovers, it can be too easy to find someone who decries Mozart as "cheesy," "sappy," or otherwise lacking edge. These people will typically hold up Beethoven and/or Bach as supposed replacements for Mozart. If only they realized the problems in both...
Beethoven is often picked because his works appeal straight to a person's jugular - or heart, depending on your view. But while there is that rhythmic and dynamic energy in his music, it lacks in the elegant. Beethoven throughout his compositions never really made a good tune: nothing that would really pair up with his predecessors or even some of his successors in terms of sing-ability (indeed, I find myself more often singing Stravinsky's Pulcinella than I do Beethoven's symphonies). He also was plagued with the urge to over-develop, resulting in many an overlong work such as in his middle "Heroic" period. So Beethoven is a beautiful, yet flawed choice.
