I'm drunk enough to say it: BALEARIC was the prototype for HAUNTOLOGICAL, a completely made up retrospective genre consisting of records with no relation to each other other than someones personal lack of taste

Where the Rhodes keyboard sample went to die and where the construct is/was woohoo bs tapes

it’s like Cold Spring, they’re outstanding but they must sit on stock constantly that niched itself into oblivion

did you ever look for tracks or post on DJH? a wonderful resource apart from one character called Martin Red, who claimed to have invented music all by himself

may have asked this before but it had a solid base, a lot like here, just focused on Balearic and all things house. “Is it Balearic?” was a huge thread of unique tracks with insane knowledge flowing

I did occasionally

re: balearic: not really tho, one of those club genres assembled by djs out of disparate parts, by definition thus ‘made up’ seemingly out of nothing, never really more-than-sum-of-parts, a vibe more than a genre, never made it as studio genre except in bastardised form.

hauntology meanwhile is all studio work and far too genre-bound for me, far too deliberate an enterprise, as if idea for it came first, then lots v niche musical activity from networked peeps who make fairly samey samey stuff, thus no need for retrospective construction at all.

multiple edits soz tryna make sense that is all

I have to admit I'm on the COLD SPRING mailing list

the last thing I bought from them ( besides the PTV live albums obvs ) was the SPACE MACHINE wooden box, pure KOSMICHE out of OSAKA

you might be taking me too seriously here, I'm drunk and belligerent ATM*

* my best friend asked me what does ATM stand for and I had to tell her "automated teller machine" or "at the moment", I just couldn't bring myself to tell her that it may mean to the dirty raincoat crowd "ASS TO MOUTH"

Weird was just watching telly with my parents and there was an escort service on this programme offering ATM, I wondered if they knew what it meant but luckily they didn't ask me to explain.

re: ATM

when I worked as TECH SUPPORT for INTERNET PROVIDER we used to use BRITISH TELECOM jargon - they had an acronym for those boxes you might see on the streets that feed phone lines to your house, they called them DISTRIBUTION POINTS or DP for short

I think you can guess where I'm going with this

one day a female manager asked a room full of male tech support "agents":

"WHAT DOES DP MEAN?"

and they all burst out laughing...

when I was younger I was sat on a couch watching some chat show with my parents and one of the guests was Fiona Richmond and my mum asked "who is Fiona Richmond?" and me and my dad said nothing other than "I don't know" ( I suppose only @WashYourHands will get this reference )

I definitely don't.

I wouldn't expect you to, you have to be of a "certain age" to get the reference

before THE INTERNET the main distribution channel of pr0n was through "the woods" and "forests'

as a teenager I once bought a Honda C50 scooter off the grandson of a British WII "boffin" responsible for the decimation of Dresden and I took it down the woods and opened the throttle fully and it lurched and then sped full force into a tree sending me flying into a scene of depravity - a pair of discarded jeans were laying in front of a stack of mildewed "nudie mags", some of which featured the "glamour model" Fiona Richmond but the pages were hard to tear apart as there was some sort of gray glue bonding them together

an actual lost world

for vinyl too without fetishising, Rob’s in town was a go to for easy loot, good hit rates, massive piles laid horizontally at times if stock was in
