Times when I can't stop listening to Townes Van Zandt... I love this song, lyrics are fucking terrible, when was a 10 dollar man a big deal, I get that it was written half a century ago but was ten dollars an obscene sum then? Surely not, would he really have to kill someone for trying to impress his misses with ten dollars, especially cos the rest of the song is all about how he hates the bitch anyway - unless she's black cos then she'd be cool. Also the bit when he says "I could die in the morning and noone would know" and then he's like "til my bird come round". But anyone who lives on their own could die without anyone knowing until one of their friends or girlfriend or whatever came round, that's not the existential problem he seems to think. Still it's loads better than songs with more logically consistent lyrics so there's that.
^I was just thinking about Eddy Grant the other day - one of the first black artists played on mtv.
