Is joy in general a discredited emotion in music

Outside of music for babies

Compare grime and drill

Grime very angry, aggressive etc but still has a sense of joy to it

Drill very humourless bleak personality erased like faces by ski masks
Its not discredited. Its just defunct. How often do you feel joyful lol

the weeknd sounds paralysed. rabbit in the headlights. there's so much weakness being expressed in his music "i can't deal with this"

No, I don't think so. It's been a bit of a buzzword for a while, in fact. Lots of references to "black joy" and "queer joy" in various media. Mind you, the Harris campaign tried to harness it and we all know how that went, so perhaps it has been somewhat discredited.

Shaka says we're currently in the pain dimension, the realm of the cenobites. Nothing matters but revenge, punishment and humiliation.

Popular Music has a settled emotional vocabulary, ways to convey desire, yearning, anger, loss etc and the more familiar and well used it becomes, the emptier it feels, the more disconnected from its supppsed referents
Part of his appeal is how he contrasts the pure land soulful falsetto register with the perversion and irony … a hollowed out sugary comedown voice

men singing falsetto often has that kind of weakness affect

Tommy Richman does something else with it, not sure what. It just doesn't really sound vulnerable or weak when he does it. He's just bragging and the usual in multiple vocal registers with no real change of character.

Tommy Richmans great, he's only got 1 and a half good songs, adding to up to about 2 minutes in total, but it makes me happy.

I'll take that over the entire weekend output any day

You don’t want to listen with other people either. This is sickly morose narcissistic music to enjoy alone

I do think joy is musically discredited though. What versions talking about feels more like a political cultural thing outside of the actual consumption of music. Black music has been pretty wallowing and sad for awhile. I'm not sure what popular queer music is but someone like Charlie xcx is even fairly contemplative for 'dance' music
