It's really just one track by them though isn't it. No garage swing, total bare bones, hardly anything like garage at all. And a lot of people will have heard it cos it was a b-side to a big hit.

ok not to get too into this, but with dilemma though nothing has been added. just taken away. its garage but as minimal as it can get. skippy garage kick+snare. 'i don't like the reefer' style garage bass. but it's also grime. and its much more widely influential as you suggest
but with kryme it feels like it's left garage behind almost entirely. too many different things going on in combination that don't slot in with other garage. I was also just making a point about how it influenced wiley. but point is, no one would ever describe it as garage.
whereas dilemma is uploaded on youtube as a 'dark garage classic'. but that's sort of what I mean about the definition of genres being defined by which artist/scene it comes from as much as the sound
otherwise you could start saying things like the jungle producer who made this wolverine nintendo soundtack in the mid-90s made the first ever grime track. or some random IDM thing that someone finds that sounds like grime in 1993 or something.

I love the way that this debate could be about anything.... replace garage/grime with blues/rocknroll or rnb/rocknroll or disco/house or disco/techno etc and change up the exemplary tunes being discussed of course. It's always the same thing - this one did it first but only by accident, this one did it more so but no-one heard it, this one came later but was more influential etc etc not to say that it's not interesting, I just think it's funny how the template is always the same.
cut the bass from the incoming track. once you have the crossfader in the middle, use the eqs and gains to alter the incoming track. you can have both hands on the mixer to do this with both decks. then, instead of flicking the crossfader to one side, first gradually take out one of the tracks with the eqs, and slam the crossfader once you are finished, not too finish.

I mean I find it hard to match the beat.
then, max out your pitch slider on the incoming track, cue it, and do a sharp curve down. you will not need to decide whether it is going faster or slower, because it will be going faster. you will eventually get it locked in.

Yeah I know how to do it - and I get that trick - I'm just saying that that kind of beat, especially with all the gaps in it is quite alien to what I've mixed before... but yeah there is no reason that I couldn't figure it out with a bit of practice for sure. In fact I have done. It's just harder for me to mix than other things.

as long as you have it roughly in time you should be able to cut it with the eqs as I was doing there.
