It's interesting to me that Linebaugh is literally in a Finnegan's Wake reading group and has to be begged to even bring up the book, or the group, or anything they've discussed together, in public on the board. Zero desire to make arguments or observations or even just ask questions here. Despite the fact that like half the board has read & thought about the Wake. Despite us having like three threads about the Wake. This is extreme Corpseyesque sloth on his part, but also probably reflects a realistic expectation that nothing good would come from publicly posting, and that his effort wouldn't be repaid with effort in kind.
It's interesting to me that both Kid Charlemagne and I are trying pretty hard to learn to read & write poetry, in our place as ignorant yung'uns. And altho there are a halfdozen board elders who spend their days seriously reading, writing, teaching, or thinking about poetry or literature more broadly, it's never felt like there was a place to discuss in earnest about what it means to be a poet, what poems are for, how they work, matters of technique—very little place or desire to actually pass this rather niche craft on, pass teaching on, etc. (
@Benny Bunter has been incredibly generous answering some of my poetry questions, and is a notable exception)
Obviously no one here is obligated to teach anyone else poetry, or provide feedback on writing, or talk shop. Certainly am not trying to ascribe blame to any individual for not satisfying my desires—that would be ridiculous. My point is just that there
are topics of shared interest that could be discussed. There's just no energy or motivation or desire to discuss them. There's no sense of stakes, and no emotional charge.
