A bartender in the states is someone that knows how to makes all kinds of mixed drinks and cocktails.
that the UK features bars where nobody working knows how to make a manhattan is one of those facts that seems fake. It‘s not rocket science, you mix a couple things together and then put them in a glass. Too cognitively taxing for ye olde english lads.

drinking is a totally different thing in the uk it's not about catering to your preferences and choices you just fit into it and get something normal like everyone else

a manhattan IS a totally normal drink here though
we're not talking about stuff that requires the expertise of a "mixologist"

you're not allowed to show off like that in a pub you have to show off with what you say and by making jokes no-one is impressed by what you've bought to drink

you can have one spirit and one mixer and maybe some ice. you're not allowed anything else
this is literally indistinguishable to me from a place where u have to get your beer microwaved and if you don’t want it like that people laugh at you

wish id been there in the pub when ghost is having a meltdown cos the 16 year old lad behind the bar has never heard of a manhattan
there’s a grocery store near where i live where all the cashiers are required to be able to identify all of the produce they sell on sight—3000 different products at any time, changing throughout the year. sometimes you’re looking at 100 different apples or mushrooms alone.

this is obviously good. similarly, the bartenders in even the grimiest american dive bars being able to make a corpse reviver #2 is a sign of a culture that values knowledge and wisdom.

the whole thing is different. the bartender in a pub is just someone who is there to give you a drink that's it. in the US they are sort of an enlarged figure. a personality. there's more of a financial relationship between the two of you

america doesn't get enough credit for how much it values cocktails. people really give a shit about them and are willing to pay for them.

every now and then you go to a bar, at least in nyc, and it's like you're talking to an actor. there's a kind of performance
