David Lynch Thread

baboon2004

Darned cockwombles.
i saw mulholland dr after it came out, when people were hyping it up a lot, so maybe thats why i didnt think that much of it. its not as filmic looking or as dark as his other movies (prob cos it was meant for tv - shame it never got commissioned, it could have been really good) and for some reason, i think its a bit gimmicky, the way it suddenly moves the timeline around in the second half. makes me think he was a bit tarantino influenced. actually i think that about lost highway too, eg all the stuff with mobsters. reminds me a bit of ghost dog too. might have to watch them again though, i have to be in a certain mood for lynch i find.

yeah, always seemed like an attempt at a refinement of lost highway, although I might eventually prefer LH. I would say MD is still pretty fucking dark though, even if not quite as much so as Fire Walk With Me. The scene where she's being picked up from the airport is chilling, for example - straight out of Rosemary's Baby. almost.

And the scene with Naomi Watts' audition is worth the price of admission in itself.

I am watching Twin Peaks for the first time. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good analysis? As far as I seem to understand for now, almost one season viewed, it's giant parody of both the detective and the soap opera.

Not sure if there is more to it and that's what I'd like to know. I am quite sure though that the humorous aspect seems quite lost on a lot of people.

I think that it is those things... but also it was the first of whatever kind of programme it is (or at least the first one that lots of people saw) and that is what made it unique I guess. Beyond that it was also a bit of a mess quite quickly and lots of it really doesn't stand up. That's speaking as someone who re-watched it recently.

Yeah. US broadcast network television programming has always been conservative and bland, so "Twin Peaks" was a huge off-the-wall/weirdo freakshow shocker to the viewing public at the time. Just the thought of David Lynch even doing a broadcast network TV series was inconceivable. You can't really judge it by today's standards, where cable networks now have plenty of oddball programming (and in fact, Lynch is supposed to be doing a new series of the program for Showtime).

Mulholland Drive is great throughout. Actually the bit where the girls get together could fit into the "Erotic Movie" thread that someone started. There is something very - I don't know - nice about that. It seems just like a dream when everything is right but real and there is a very palpable sense of loss when it all changes.
I seem to remember Fire Walk With Me as being good but that was a long time ago. On the other hand I didn't enjoy Blue Velvet that much, perhaps it had been built up too much.

I've read about this, sounds really good, I'll check it out when I get a chance.

What? I didn't know there was an erotic movie thread!?

lost highway is one of my top lynches. i prefer it to mulholland drive as that feels like a slightly flabbier remake.

partly it's cos i really like patricia arquette and she's just so cold and sinister in it. the bit where she says to him "you'll never have me" and the ridiculously scary guy at the party, mr eddie and all that.

"gay whipped"

Gay-whipped? what the fuck is that supposed to mean!? i take it it means that gays like musicals and like to turn films into them? that gays cntrol Hollywood? offensive and wrong, mate.

for one thing this clip , although it turns into a musical number, couldnt be further from a musical as you might expect it (actually my impresson of the scene went from "god no" to "um... what.. ok yeah!" as soon as the music started.) for another thing INLAND EMPIRE (which this may or may not be a clip from) is not a hollywood film, it is financed completely indepenently.

I've really never read anything that's offended me on Dissensus. i guess there's a first time for everything.

Dave Lynch is a closeted Midwestern conservative, but he's cool. His movies lack emotion, except for the Twin Peaks series.
